Competition Lineup Features Global Auteurs

The main competition for the Palme d’Or includes an impressive slate of internationally acclaimed directors. Among the confirmed titles are Asghar Farhadi’s Parallel Tales, Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Sheep in the Box, and Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Minotaur. The selection also features Paweł Pawlikowski’s Fatherland, Cristian Mungiu’s Fjord, Na Hong-jin’s Hope, László Nemes’s Moulin, and Ira Sachs’s The Man I Love.

Frémaux noted that approximately 95 per cent of the selection was finalised, with a handful of late-arriving films to be confirmed in the coming weeks — a tradition that often yields surprise additions. The lineup balances established masters with emerging voices across global cinema.

Park Chan-wook Leads Jury as President

South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, best known for directing Oldboy and Decision to Leave, will serve as jury president for the 2026 edition. The remaining jury members are yet to be announced. Park’s appointment continues Cannes’ tradition of honouring Asian cinema’s leading voices.

Opening Film and Ceremony

Pierre Salvadori’s La Vénus électrique will open the festival on 12 May at the Grand Théâtre Lumière. Eye Haïdara has been named Mistress of Ceremonies for the 2026 edition. In an unexpected highlight, John Travolta will present his directorial debut at the festival, marking his return to the Croisette decades after Pulp Fiction premiered there.

Record Submissions Reflect Cinema’s Global Reach

The 2,541 feature-film submissions represent an increase of more than 1,000 compared with a decade ago, Frémaux said. The breadth of countries represented — 141, approaching Olympic figures — underscores cinema’s enduring global appeal despite the rise of streaming platforms.

Last year’s 78th edition played a significant role in the awards season. Four of the five films nominated for Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards premiered at Cannes, including Palme d’Or winner It Was Just an Accident and Grand Prize recipient Sentimental Value.

What to Watch For

For Indian cinema enthusiasts, the competition slate will be closely watched for any late additions from South Asian filmmakers. India has historically had a strong presence in the Un Certain Regard and other parallel sections.
