Kerala has recorded its highest-ever tourist footfall, with 2,58,80,365 visitors — both foreign and domestic — arriving in 2025. The figure represents a 12.5 per cent increase over 2024’s tally of 2,29,85,363, confirming what Tourism Minister P A Mohamed Riyas described as “a phase of consecutive record-breaking growth in tourist arrivals” for the southern state.

Domestic Tourism Drives the Surge

Domestic tourist arrivals accounted for the bulk of Kerala’s growth, reaching 2,50,58,366 in 2025 — up 12.6 per cent from the previous year’s 2,22,46,989. Compared to pre-Covid levels, domestic arrivals have surged 36.3 per cent, a milestone that signals a structural shift in how Indian travellers view South India as a destination.

Idukki district emerged as the top choice for domestic tourists, attracting 46,79,800 visitors in 2025. The hill district’s Munnar tea plantations, Thekkady wildlife sanctuary and Anamudi Shola National Park drew nature-focused travellers in large numbers. Ernakulam (44,29,899 visitors) followed closely, buoyed by Kochi’s position as a cruise-ship port and gateway to the backwaters. Thiruvananthapuram (43,75,846), Thrissur (31,24,696), Wayanad (14,73,710) and Kozhikode (14,69,253) completed the top six.

Foreign Arrivals Approaching Pre-Pandemic Levels

Kerala welcomed 8,21,999 foreign tourists in 2025, an 11.3 per cent rise over the previous year. While the figure has not yet reached pre-pandemic highs, the steady recovery trajectory points toward a full rebound by 2026-27. Key source countries include the United Kingdom, Germany, France, the United States and the Gulf nations, with medical tourism and Ayurveda wellness stays drawing an increasing share of overseas visitors.

Minister Riyas acknowledged that global geopolitical tensions have slowed the pace of foreign tourism recovery but noted that Kerala’s branding as a wellness and nature destination continues to gain traction in European and North American markets. Travel industry stakeholders expect the upcoming monsoon season’s Ayurveda packages to drive further growth.

What Is Drawing Visitors

Major source states for domestic tourists include Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Telangana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. The backwaters of Alleppey, houseboat cruises, Wayanad’s coffee plantations and beach destinations along the Malabar Coast remain core draws.

Kerala’s festival calendar also plays a role: Thrissur Pooram 2026 preparations are already under way for the 27 April celebration, and the festival historically drives a significant visitor spike. India’s tourism infrastructure push in Budget 2026 includes dedicated funding for South Indian heritage sites and turtle trails along Kerala’s coast.

As Indian outbound travel hits record levels, Kerala’s ability to sustain double-digit domestic growth suggests that the state’s brand positioning — blending nature, culture and wellness — is resonating strongly with a new generation of Indian travellers.
