Dream11 and IPL 2026: Fantasy Cricket Platforms Reinvent Fan Engagement With AI-Powered Features

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season kicks off in late March, fantasy sports platforms are gearing up for what promises to

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season kicks off in late March, fantasy sports platforms are gearing up for what promises to be their biggest season yet. Leading the charge is Dream11, India’s largest fantasy sports platform with over 220 million registered users, which has rolled out a suite of AI-powered features designed to transform how fans engage with cricket. From machine learning-based player recommendations to real-time performance prediction models, the integration of artificial intelligence into fantasy cricket is not just a technological upgrade—it represents a fundamental shift in the relationship between fans, data, and the sport they love.

Dream11’s AI Overhaul

Dream11’s marquee innovation for IPL 2026 is “Dream AI,” a feature that uses machine learning algorithms trained on over 15 years of cricket data to generate personalised team recommendations for users. Unlike generic “expert picks” that have long been a staple of fantasy platforms, Dream AI analyses each user’s historical selection patterns, risk appetite, and preferred playing style to offer tailored suggestions. The system also incorporates real-time variables—pitch conditions, weather forecasts, team combinations, and recent player form—to adjust its recommendations right up to the contest deadline.

“We’ve been investing in AI and data science for over three years, and Dream AI is the culmination of that work,” said Harsh Jain, CEO and co-founder of Dream11, at a press event in Mumbai. “Our goal is not to play the game for our users but to give them better tools to make informed decisions. Fantasy sports is a game of skill, and AI enhances that skill.”

The IPL Catalyst

The IPL has always been the primary revenue and engagement driver for fantasy sports in India, and the 2026 season amplifies this dynamic further. With the league expanding to a 94-match format (up from 74 in 2024), fantasy platforms have more opportunities to monetise through daily contests. Dream11, which holds the IPL’s official fantasy gaming sponsor rights, projects that over 150 million fantasy teams will be created across the tournament—a 25 per cent increase over 2025.

The platform has also reintroduced paid contests for IPL 2026 after a brief regulatory-driven pause in certain states. The return of real-money contests, with entry fees ranging from ₹25 to ₹10,000, is expected to drive a significant revenue boost. Industry estimates suggest that Dream11’s gross merchandise value (GMV) during IPL 2026 could exceed ₹15,000 crore—a figure that would make the platform’s IPL season alone larger than many standalone consumer internet businesses in India.

Competition Intensifies

Dream11’s dominance, while formidable, is increasingly being challenged by a cohort of well-funded competitors. My11Circle, backed by the Games24x7 group, has carved out a significant niche with its “Play with Champions” feature, which allows users to compete against fantasy teams created by retired cricket legends like Sourav Ganguly and Shane Watson. The platform claims 50 million registered users and has been growing rapidly in South Indian markets.

MPL (Mobile Premier League), another major player, has pivoted its fantasy sports strategy to focus on micro-contests with smaller pool sizes, targeting users who prefer lower-stakes competition with higher probability of winning. This approach has resonated particularly well with younger users and first-time fantasy players, helping MPL grow its fantasy user base by 40 per cent year-on-year.

Newer entrants are also making noise. Vision11, a fantasy platform focused on vernacular content and regional language support, has built a user base of 18 million by targeting non-English-speaking cricket fans in states like UP, Bihar, and Rajasthan—demographics that larger platforms have historically underserved.

Beyond Cricket: Fantasy Diversification

While cricket remains the anchor, fantasy sports platforms are actively diversifying into other sports to reduce seasonal dependency. Fantasy football (soccer) has seen significant growth, driven by the Indian Super League (ISL) and the growing Indian audience for the English Premier League and UEFA Champions League. Fantasy kabaddi, aligned with the Pro Kabaddi League, is another emerging vertical, with Dream11 reporting a 60 per cent year-on-year increase in kabaddi fantasy users.

Even non-sporting fantasy formats are gaining traction. Dream11 has experimented with fantasy stock markets and fantasy entertainment (predict award show outcomes), though these remain small relative to the core sports product.

The Engagement Multiplier

For the IPL ecosystem, fantasy sports serve as a powerful engagement multiplier. Research by KPMG India suggests that fantasy sports users watch 45 per cent more live cricket than non-users, driven by the personal stake they have in individual player performances. This deeper engagement benefits broadcasters, sponsors, and the league itself, creating a symbiotic relationship between fantasy platforms and the sporting events they depend on.

As Dream11 and its competitors roll out AI features, vernacular interfaces, and deeper sport integrations for IPL 2026, the fantasy sports layer is becoming inseparable from the cricket-watching experience in India. What was once a supplementary activity for tech-savvy fans has become a mainstream parallel to the sport itself—and AI is only accelerating this convergence.
