IPL 2026: KKR vs PBKS Match Abandoned Due to Rain as Kolkata Earn First Point

KKR vs PBKS IPL 2026 Match 12 abandoned due to persistent rain at Eden Gardens. Kolkata Knight Riders secure their first point of the season.

Kolkata Knight Riders earned their first point of the Indian Premier League 2026 season on 6 April after their Match 12 clash against Punjab Kings was abandoned without a result at Eden Gardens. Persistent rain and a waterlogged outfield made it impossible to resume play after a stoppage that lasted more than three hours.

Rain Washes Out a Promising Contest

KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and chose to bat on what he described as a dry, good wicket with slightly less grass cover. However, Punjab Kings bowlers struck early, reducing KKR to a shaky position with two wickets falling inside the powerplay before rain intervened for the first time.

Groundstaff worked continuously to clear standing water from the square and outfield, but a second heavy spell between 7 pm and 9 pm IST ended any hope of play resuming. Umpires conducted two inspections before calling the match off, awarding one point each to both franchises.

Key Team Changes Forced by Injury

KKR made two forced changes to their lineup. Leg-spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, who was injured while taking a catch in the previous match against Sunrisers Hyderabad in their heavy defeat, was ruled out. Sunil Narine was also unavailable because of illness.

Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer said he was satisfied with the toss result and hinted that he had been prepared to bowl himself during the match, signalling confidence in the team’s depth.

What the Washout Means for the Points Table

The solitary point moves KKR above Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2026 standings, though they remain near the bottom with just one point from their first three outings. It marks the franchise’s worst start to an IPL campaign in 14 years.

PBKS, by contrast, climb to the top of the table on net run rate after collecting their fourth point of the season. The result underscores the fine margins in a congested early-season table where rain-affected fixtures could prove decisive later in the campaign.

Cameron Green Nears Bowling Return

In positive news for KKR, bowling coach Tim Southee revealed that high-profile acquisition Cameron Green has resumed bowling in the nets and is close to being match-ready. Green’s return could provide the pace-bowling option Kolkata desperately need as they look to recover from their slow start.

The second week of IPL 2026 has already produced several surprises, including Jasprit Bumrah’s record-breaking spell and three teams defying pre-tournament predictions. KKR will hope the forthcoming fixtures offer drier conditions and a chance to build momentum.

Looking Ahead

With several high-profile sporting events running in parallel across India, including the Indian Super League 2025-26 title race, fan attention remains divided. KKR’s next fixture offers a must-win scenario if the defending champions are to keep their playoff hopes alive.
