Shimla Leads the Summer Charge

Shimla in Himachal Pradesh remains the most popular North India hill station for April visitors, benefiting from its proximity to Delhi and Chandigarh. Rohtang Pass remains closed for routine winter maintenance and is expected to reopen in May, with the Atal Tunnel providing year-round access to Lahaul-Spiti. Nainital’s lake district in Uttarakhand is experiencing moderate crowds in early April, with May expected to bring the annual summer surge. Mussoorie, 35 km from Dehradun, is similarly transitioning into high season. Both towns have introduced local traffic management measures to handle peak-period congestion.

Infrastructure Upgrades Support Tourism Growth

India’s tourism infrastructure push in Budget 2026 allocated dedicated funds for mountain trail development in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, with ecologically sustainable trekking routes being developed alongside existing road infrastructure. April offers a sweet spot for hill station visitors — crowds are smaller than in May’s peak holiday period, and the weather is ideal for outdoor activities. Evenings can be cool, particularly above 2,000 metres, so light woolens are advisable. Bookings at popular properties fill up quickly once school holidays start in the third week of April.

While domestic hill station tourism thrives, Indian outbound travel has also hit record numbers, with 30 million trips in 2026. However, the domestic hill station market remains the primary escape for most Indian families during summer.
