India Mobile Gaming Market Targets $4 Billion in 2026 as BGMI Esports Roadmap Opens Five International Slots
India’s mobile gaming market is projected to cross $4 billion in revenue in 2026, driven by surging in-app purchases, a growing base of paying players, and an esports ecosystem that is rapidly professionalising. KRAFTON India has revealed its BGMI (Battlegrounds Mobile India) Esports 2026 Roadmap, which for the first time could give Indian teams up to five slots at major international tournaments — a dramatic expansion from the country’s modest global presence just two years ago.
The roadmap outlines a comprehensive pathway from grassroots tournaments to the global stage. The BGMI Pro Series (BMPS) 2026 will serve as the primary qualifier for the PUBG Mobile World Cup 2026, to be held in Riyadh. Beyond BMPS, KRAFTON’s structure includes BGIS (Battlegrounds Mobile India Series), BMSD, and BMIC tournaments, each potentially linking to international competition. If India follows the pattern established in 2025 — when the country received multiple PMGC and World Cup slots — Indian teams could secure one World Cup slot, three PMGC 2026 slots, and one PMGO 2026 slot.
ARPUs Soar as Monetisation Shifts
Perhaps the most striking data point in India’s mobile gaming trajectory is the growth in average revenue per user (ARPU). According to a Bitkraft and RedSeer report, Indian gaming ARPUs have grown approximately nine-fold from roughly $3 in 2020 to around $27 by 2025, reflecting a fundamental shift from ad-based monetisation toward in-app purchases. This transition has been accelerated by the regulatory crackdown on real money gaming (RMG), which pushed discretionary spending toward traditional gaming categories.
The market remains heavily concentrated, however. Battle royale games — primarily BGMI and Garena Free Fire — account for approximately 47 per cent of the entire Indian gaming market. This concentration, while showing massive demand, also suggests a significant gap for new genres and breakout titles. Several Indian studios are now targeting this gap, with new dating simulation games designed specifically for the Indian market and mobile extraction shooters aimed at global audiences entering development.
Esports as a Legitimate Career Path
The 2025 season was widely considered a golden year for Indian esports, with the country receiving unprecedented international representation. India qualified a record 12 players for the Asian Games Esports competition, with BGMI and Valorant driving the competitive surge. The 2026 roadmap aims to build on this momentum, with KRAFTON investing in a structured pathway from amateur to professional competition.
India’s gaming ecosystem is maturing across all segments, not just mobile. The PC gaming market is experiencing its own golden age, driven by affordable GPUs and local esports leagues. India’s position as one of the fastest-growing major economies, combined with its mobile-first consumer landscape and rapidly expanding internet user base — set to cross 900 million in 2026 — provides the structural foundation for the gaming industry’s continued growth.
What Is Next for Indian Mobile Gaming
Industry analysts expect 2026 to bring several inflection points: the launch of new studios focused on India-specific content, continued ARPU growth as payment infrastructure matures, and increasing international recognition of Indian esports talent. With the PUBG Mobile World Cup in Riyadh offering a global stage, Indian mobile gaming is transitioning from a large but undermonetised market to a sophisticated ecosystem where players, creators, and investors all see a viable future.
