Bhooth Bangla Reunites Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan for Horror Comedy Release on 17 April

Bhooth Bangla starring Akshay Kumar and directed by Priyadarshan releases on 17 April 2026.

Bhooth Bangla, the highly anticipated horror comedy starring Akshay Kumar and directed by Priyadarshan, is set for a theatrical release on 17 April 2026. The film marks the first collaboration between the actor-director pair in 14 years and reunites several cast members from the 2007 blockbuster Bhool Bhulaiyaa.

Cast and Creative Team

Akshay Kumar leads the ensemble as Arjun Acharya, supported by Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav as Sunder, Tabu, Wamiqa Gabbi, Jisshu Sengupta, Manoj Joshi, Mithila Palkar, Asrani, and Rajesh Sharma. The casting of Kumar alongside Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, Asrani, and Manoj Joshi recreates the chemistry that made Bhool Bhulaiyaa a cultural touchstone for Indian comedy.

The film is produced by Akshay Kumar, Shobha Kapoor, and Ekta Kapoor under the Balaji Telefilms banner in association with Cape of Good Films. Priyadarshan, who has directed some of Bollywood’s most commercially successful comedies including Hera Pheri and Hungama, returns to Hindi cinema with what early reviews describe as a blend of comedy, horror, and suspense.

What We Know About the Plot

Official plot details remain under wraps, though the teaser released in March suggests a narrative centred on a haunted mansion and a group of characters who find themselves trapped within it. Priyadarshan has described the film as a return to the classic Indian haunted-house format, leaning more on physical comedy and situational humour than on CGI-driven scares.

The director has noted that the film is not a sequel to Bhool Bhulaiyaa, despite sharing cast members and a similar genre. It stands as an independent story with its own mythology and setting.

Box Office Expectations

Bhooth Bangla enters a competitive April release window. The Indian box office has seen exceptional performance in early 2026, with Dhurandhar 2 crossing Rs 800 crore to become the third-highest grossing Indian film of all time. Trade analysts project an opening weekend of Rs 40 to 55 crore for Bhooth Bangla, positioning it as one of the bigger releases of the month.

The entertainment industry is also watching how theatrical releases interact with the growing OTT market. Sitaare Zameen Par led the April OTT lineup, and streaming platforms are expected to bid aggressively for Bhooth Bangla’s digital rights once the theatrical window concludes.

April 2026 Release Calendar

Bhooth Bangla is not the only major release this month. Other notable titles include Dacoit, The Drama, and Mercy, each targeting different audience segments. The South Indian cinema market is also active, with Telugu films dominating the Q1 landscape and several dubbed releases competing for Hindi-speaking audiences.
