PV Sindhu Targets 2028 LA Olympics as India Badminton Stars Navigate Testing 2026 Season
Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu is keeping a long-term focus on the 2028 Los Angeles Games while working through an uneven 2026 BWF season that has produced flashes of her best form alongside frustrating early exits. The 30-year-old has said that staying mentally strong and injury-free remains her priority as India’s badminton squad navigates a demanding international calendar.
Season So Far: Highs and Lows
Sindhu opened 2026 with a promising run to the semi-finals of the Malaysia Open Super 1000 in January, raising hopes of a sustained comeback after an injury-affected 2025. She followed that with a competitive first-round win at the Indonesia Masters Super 500, defeating Japan’s Manami Suizu 22–20, 21–18 in a match where she trailed in the first game before rallying with six consecutive points.
However, inconsistency has been the theme. Sindhu was eliminated in the opening round of the India Open Super 750, losing to familiar rival Thuy Linh Nguyen of Vietnam. She subsequently pulled out of the Badminton Asia Team Championships, dealing a blow to India’s medal prospects at the continental event.
The Road to LA 2028
At 30, Sindhu is in a phase where every tournament choice carries strategic weight. The BWF Olympic qualification period for LA 2028 begins in 2027, giving her approximately 18 months to rebuild ranking points and peak at the right time. Her current world ranking, though lower than during her 2019 World Championship triumph, remains within striking distance of the seedings required for a strong Olympic draw.
“I want to make sure I stay fit and mentally fresh,” Sindhu told reporters in January. “The Olympics is the biggest goal. Every tournament now is part of that preparation.”
Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya Sen Hold the Fort
While Sindhu manages her workload, India’s sporting bench strength in badminton rests heavily on Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth. Sen, ranked inside the top 15, is India’s most consistent male shuttler and has been competing at every major BWF event in 2026. Srikanth, now ranked 33rd, showed resilience at the Indonesia Masters by battling past world No. 22 Koki Watanabe 21–15, 21–23, 24–22 in a gruelling 72-minute match.
Doubles and Mixed Challenges
India’s doubles programme remains a work in progress. While Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty established themselves as a world-class men’s doubles pair, finding consistent success in women’s doubles and mixed doubles has been harder. The Badminton Association of India (BAI) has invested in dedicated doubles training camps, but results at the international level have been incremental.
What to Watch
The BWF Super 750 and Super 1000 events in the second half of the year will determine seedings and qualification pathways for the world championships and, ultimately, the Olympics. Sindhu’s participation choices, Sen’s consistency, and Srikanth’s ability to push deeper into draws will shape India’s badminton narrative for the rest of 2026.
For a country that has passionate sporting fans but relatively few Olympic medallists, Sindhu’s pursuit of a third Games medal remains one of the most compelling stories in Indian sport.
