A Delhi University assistant professor was found murdered inside her locked flat in East Delhi’s Vasundhara Enclave on Thursday, 5 June 2026, in a case that has sent shockwaves through the academic community. The victim, Devosmita Paul, taught at Shivaji College under Delhi University and was living alone at Satyam Apartments at the time of her death.

According to Moneycontrol and NDTV, police received a call at approximately 2:35 pm at the New Ashok Nagar Police Station from Devarati Paul, the victim’s 49-year-old sister. Devarati informed officers that Devosmita had been found dead inside her flat after failing to respond to repeated phone calls throughout the day.

How the Body Was Discovered

Police officials said the flat had been locked from the outside since morning. When Devosmita did not answer phone calls or messages, her sister grew increasingly worried and travelled to the apartment to check on her. Upon arrival, Devarati found the flat still locked and was forced to break open the lock to gain entry.

Inside, she discovered her sister’s body. The scene, according to initial police descriptions, indicated a violent and deliberate attack.

During the preliminary investigation, officers found that Devosmita appeared to have been struck on the head with a heavy object, causing a deep head injury. Additionally, the veins in her wrist were found severed. The combination of injuries suggests the attack was not impulsive but carried out with intent, though police are still working to establish the exact sequence of events.

Robbery Ruled Out as Motive

One of the most striking aspects of the initial investigation is that police found no signs of robbery. Jewellery, cash, and other valuables in the house were found untouched, leading investigators to conclude that theft was almost certainly not the motive behind the crime.

“When you have a locked flat with no signs of forced entry and nothing stolen, the investigation naturally moves towards examining the victim’s personal and professional relationships,” a senior police officer familiar with the case explained to reporters. “This appears to be a targeted attack by someone who knew the victim.”

The fact that the flat was locked from outside raises critical questions. Either the attacker had access to a key, or the lock was manipulated after the crime was committed. Forensic teams are examining the lock mechanism and door for evidence.

Personal Background

Devosmita Paul was an assistant professor at Shivaji College, one of the constituent colleges of Delhi University. According to reports, she had been living separately from her husband, who reportedly resides in Bengaluru. The couple’s living arrangement and the nature of their relationship are expected to be key areas of investigation.

Colleagues at Shivaji College described Paul as a dedicated teacher who was well-liked by students. “She was someone who took her work seriously and was always available for students beyond class hours,” said a fellow faculty member who asked not to be named.

Investigation Progress

The body has been sent to Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Hospital for a post-mortem examination, which is expected to provide more details about the time of death, the exact nature of the injuries, and whether there was any struggle before the attack.

Police have registered a murder case and formed multiple teams to investigate the incident. Key lines of inquiry include:

  • CCTV footage from the apartment complex and surrounding areas
  • Phone records and digital communications of the victim
  • Interviews with neighbours, colleagues, and family members
  • The estranged husband’s whereabouts and alibi
  • Any recent disputes or threats reported by the victim

Officers are also examining whether any maintenance staff, delivery personnel, or other visitors had accessed the building in the hours before the body was discovered.

Safety Concerns for Women Living Alone

The murder has reignited concerns about the safety of women living alone in Delhi, a city that consistently ranks among India’s most unsafe for women despite years of increased policing and awareness campaigns following the 2012 Nirbhaya case.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Delhi reported over 14,000 crimes against women in 2024, the highest among all Indian cities. While many of these cases involve domestic violence and harassment, violent crimes against women living alone in residential areas represent a particularly alarming category.

“Every time a case like this comes to light, it forces us to ask what has actually changed,” said Dr Ranjana Kumari, Director of the Centre for Social Research. “Women should be able to live independently without fearing for their lives.”

Academic Community in Shock

The Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) issued a statement expressing “deep shock and anguish” at the murder of a colleague. The association called for a swift investigation and demanded enhanced security measures for faculty members, particularly those living alone in off-campus housing.

Shivaji College’s principal acknowledged the tragedy and said the college would cooperate fully with the police investigation. Several students took to social media to share their grief, describing Paul as an inspiring and approachable teacher who went out of her way to help students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The case bears some similarities to other recent incidents involving professionals living alone in Indian cities, highlighting what safety experts describe as a gap between India’s rapid urbanisation and the security infrastructure needed to protect residents in densely populated residential areas.

Police have appealed for anyone with information about the case to come forward. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates are expected once the post-mortem report is available.
