Suvendu Adhikari’s PA Chandranath Rath Shot Dead in Madhyamgram as Post-Poll Violence Rocks West Bengal
Chandranath Rath, the personal assistant of Bharatiya Janata Party leader Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead on the night of 07 May 2026 in Madhyamgram, North 24 Parganas district, in what police believe was a meticulously planned assassination. The killing has sent shockwaves through West Bengal’s already volatile post-election political landscape and reignited a fierce debate over political violence in the state.
The Attack: 10 Rounds Fired From Close Range
According to police sources and eyewitness accounts, Rath was returning from Kolkata to Madhyamgram on Wednesday night when his Scorpio SUV was intercepted near the Duhadi area. Investigators believe the attackers had conducted a thorough recce of the route and mapped an escape plan before carrying out the ambush.
A silver-coloured Santro car bearing registration number WB74AX2270 reportedly overtook Rath’s vehicle and forced it to slow down. Moments later, bike-borne assailants opened fire from close range. At least 10 rounds were fired, with bullets striking Rath in the chest, abdomen, and head. He was rushed to a private hospital in critical condition but was declared dead on arrival.
Eyewitnesses told police that the motorcycle used in the attack carried no registration plate, strengthening suspicions of a premeditated and professionally executed hit. The attackers fled the scene immediately after the shooting, and the area was sealed off within hours as forensic teams moved in to collect evidence.
Investigation Points to Pre-Planned Assassination
Senior officers from the Barasat police commissionerate told reporters that the crime bore all the hallmarks of a contract killing. CCTV footage from the area has captured the movements of several suspicious individuals on motorcycles, and efforts are underway to identify them through facial recognition technology and vehicle tracking systems.
Three local individuals with criminal histories are currently being questioned by police, though the main assailants remain at large. Investigators are also examining Rath’s phone records and recent movements to determine whether he had received any threats in the days leading up to the attack. Police have formed multiple teams to track down the suspects, and raids are being conducted across North 24 Parganas and adjacent districts.
A forensic examination of the recovered bullet casings suggests that the attackers used at least two firearms. This, combined with the coordinated use of a car and a motorcycle, indicates that a minimum of four to five individuals were directly involved in the operation, according to sources familiar with the investigation.
Political Firestorm Erupts After the Killing
Suvendu Adhikari, who recently defeated Mamata Banerjee in the Bhabanipur constituency, was among the first to react. He said the killing was a direct consequence of his role in ending the Trinamool Congress regime in West Bengal. “I defeated Mamata, and that is why my PA was murdered. This is political vendetta of the worst kind,” Adhikari said in a statement.
The BJP has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the killing, alleging that TMC-affiliated goons were behind the attack. Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to the West Bengal Director General of Police and sought a detailed report on the incident within 48 hours.
The TMC, meanwhile, has denied any involvement and accused the BJP of politicising a law-and-order matter. Senior TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said the party condemns all forms of violence and urged the police to bring the perpetrators to justice without any political interference.
West Bengal’s Troubled Post-Election Phase
The shooting comes at a particularly sensitive time for West Bengal. The state recently witnessed a historic change of power after the BJP stormed to a historic victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, ending the TMC’s 15-year rule. The transition has been marred by reports of post-poll violence from multiple districts, with both sides accusing each other of intimidation and retaliatory attacks.
Following the election results, the Governor dissolved the state assembly after Mamata Banerjee refused to resign, further escalating political tensions. Incidents of arson, property damage, and physical assaults have been reported from Barrackpore, Basirhat, Diamond Harbour, and parts of South 24 Parganas in the days since the results were declared.
The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of the violence reports and has asked the state administration to submit a detailed report within two weeks. Civil society organisations have called for immediate deployment of central forces in the worst-affected areas to restore order.
Security Concerns for BJP Leaders in Bengal
The killing of Rath has raised serious questions about the security of BJP leaders and their associates in West Bengal. Several BJP MLAs and party workers have reported receiving threats since the election results, and at least three have sought enhanced security cover from the state police.
Home Ministry officials in New Delhi are reportedly reviewing the security arrangements for newly elected BJP legislators in West Bengal, with a particular focus on districts where political tensions remain high. The Central Reserve Police Force, which was deployed during the elections, may see its deployment extended beyond the usual post-election period if the violence continues.
Political analysts say the killing could have far-reaching consequences for the incoming BJP government’s ability to establish authority in the state. “The first test for any new government is its ability to maintain law and order. If BJP leaders and their associates are being targeted with such impunity, it sends a very dangerous signal,” said Mainak Ghosh, a political commentator based in Kolkata.
What Comes Next
The Madhyamgram police station has registered a case under Sections 103 (murder) and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The state Criminal Investigation Department has been asked to assist in the probe, and a special investigation team is expected to be constituted within the next 24 hours.
The BJP has called for a 12-hour bandh in North 24 Parganas district to protest the killing, while the party’s national leadership has scheduled an emergency meeting to discuss the security situation in West Bengal. As investigators race to identify and apprehend the attackers, the murder of Chandranath Rath stands as a grim reminder that political violence continues to cast a long shadow over India’s democratic transitions.
