Kalinga Lancers Win Historic Hockey India League 2026 Championship as League Achieves One Billion Digital Impressions and Record Viewership

The Vedanta Kalinga Lancers clinched the Men’s Hockey India League 2026 title with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Ranchi Royals in the final at Kalinga Hockey Stadium in Bhubaneswar on 26 January, capping off a season that set new records for viewership, digital engagement and commercial interest in Indian hockey. The league, featuring eight teams competing across three cities, has established itself as one of the most exciting sporting properties in India.

A Championship Final for the Ages

The final between the Kalinga Lancers and Ranchi Royals was a fitting conclusion to a season that delivered consistently thrilling matches. Belgian star Alexander Hendrickx was the standout performer in the final, leading the Lancers to their title in front of a packed Kalinga Hockey Stadium audience. The Lancers, who had topped the league stage with 16 points from seven matches, confirmed their status as the best team in the tournament through their dominant and consistent performances.

Captain Arthur Van Doren credited the championship victory to the team’s cohesion. “We have a good and solid unit,” the Belgian international said after lifting the trophy. Head Coach Jay Stacy praised the squad’s ability to maintain intensity throughout the gruelling tournament, which spanned nearly four weeks of competitive hockey across three venues.

The Ranchi Royals, who finished second in the league stage with 12 points, mounted a spirited challenge in the final but ultimately fell short against a Lancers side that had been the most complete team throughout the competition. The Royals’ campaign was highlighted by a dominant 6-2 victory over SG Pipers and a comprehensive 4-1 win against Shrachi Bengal Tigers during the league phase.

Tournament Overview and Key Performers

The Hockey India League 2026 ran from 3 to 26 January across Chennai, Ranchi and Bhubaneswar. The league phase saw each of the eight teams play seven matches, with the top four qualifying for the playoffs. The standings reflected the competitive balance of the tournament, with just seven points separating first-placed Lancers from eighth-placed SG Pipers.

Shrachi Bengal Tigers’ Jugraj Singh was the tournament’s top scorer with five goals, including three from penalty corners and two from penalty strokes. Jeremy Hayward of JSW Soorma Hockey Club and Harmanpreet Singh, also of Soorma, tied for second with four goals each. The Ranchi Royals were the highest-scoring team with 31 goals across all competitions, followed by Hyderabad Toofans with 25.

The playoff round delivered edge-of-the-seat drama. Hyderabad Toofans defeated HIL GC 2-0 in the Eliminator, while the Lancers beat the Royals 2-1 in Qualifier 1. In Qualifier 2, the Royals edged out the Toofans 3-2 to earn a second chance at the title. The third-place match between HIL GC and Toofans went the distance, with the Toofans prevailing 4-3.

Unprecedented Commercial and Digital Success

The Hockey India League 2026 achieved a landmark one billion digital views and impressions across social media platforms and YouTube, establishing it as one of the most digitally engaged sporting events in India. Television viewership rose 37 per cent compared to the previous edition, reflecting the league’s growing mainstream appeal.

The digital success was driven by aggressive content strategies across platforms, including behind-the-scenes footage, player interviews, match highlights and fan engagement initiatives. The league’s ability to attract a younger, digitally native audience has been crucial to its commercial growth, with sponsorship revenue increasing substantially year on year.

SG Pipers Triumph in Women’s League

The Women’s Hockey India League 2025-26, which began on 28 December in Ranchi, concluded with SG Pipers lifting the title after a dramatic shootout victory over Shrachi Bengal Tigers in the final. Captain Navneet Kaur inspired the Pipers’ comeback, stating that her team “did not want to give up until the last minute.”

The women’s league, running alongside the men’s competition, has been instrumental in elevating the profile of women’s hockey in India. The Pipers took home Rs 1.5 crore in prize money, providing a significant financial boost to the women’s game.

FIH Pro League and International Calendar

Building on the HIL’s momentum, Hockey India has named a 24-member squad for the FIH Pro League 2025-26. The Rourkela and Hobart legs of the competition provide Indian players with consistent high-level international exposure, helping to maintain the competitive sharpness developed during the HIL season.

India’s forward Angad Bir Singh was among the notable selections for the Hobart leg, reflecting the emergence of young talent through the domestic league system. The pathway from HIL to international representation has become increasingly clear, with the league serving as both a development platform and a performance benchmark.

As the HIL continues to grow commercially and in sporting quality, Indian hockey finds itself in a stronger position than at any point in recent decades. The combination of domestic league success, international competitiveness and growing public interest creates a virtuous cycle that bodes well for the sport’s future in the country. With the 2026 Asian Games on the horizon, India’s hockey ambitions have never been higher. The Aichi-Nagoya Games, scheduled from September to October, represent the next major target for the men’s and women’s squads, both of which will draw heavily on the talent developed through the HIL system. For fans, sponsors and administrators, the Hockey India League 2026 has demonstrated that Indian hockey can be commercially viable, competitively exciting and globally relevant, all at once.
