The southwest monsoon has arrived in Bihar, bringing much-needed relief from weeks of scorching heatwave conditions but also claiming five lives in lightning strikes in Khagaria district on June 11. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed the monsoon’s advance into the state and predicted rapid progress across Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh over the next two to three days, signalling the beginning of the crucial rainy season for India’s agricultural heartland.

The five victims in Khagaria — including two farmers working in paddy fields, a woman near her home, and two children playing outdoors — were killed when intense thunderstorm activity accompanied the monsoon’s arrival. Lightning fatalities are tragically common during the early monsoon period in Bihar, which records more lightning deaths than any other Indian state. The state disaster management authority has issued advisories urging residents to stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid open fields, isolated trees, and water bodies.

Monsoon’s Progress and Outlook

The monsoon, which hit the Kerala coast on June 1 — right on schedule — has made steady progress across the western coast, central India, and the northeast before reaching Bihar. The IMD reported that monsoon conditions are now established across Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, most of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, large parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, and the entire northeastern region.

The advance into Bihar is significant for the state’s predominantly agricultural economy. Kharif (summer) crops — including rice, maize, and pulses — depend critically on monsoon rainfall for sowing and early growth. Farmers across the state have been anxiously awaiting the rains, with many reporting delayed sowing due to the extended dry spell and heatwave conditions that preceded the monsoon’s arrival.

The IMD has forecast above-normal rainfall for Bihar and eastern India during the June-September monsoon season, which is good news for agricultural output. However, the department has also warned of the increased risk of flash floods, particularly in north Bihar districts that are prone to flooding from rivers originating in Nepal. The Kosi, Gandak, and Bagmati river systems, which have a history of devastating floods, will be closely monitored throughout the season.

Relief From the Heatwave

The monsoon’s arrival has brought dramatic temperature relief across Bihar and neighbouring states. Patna, which recorded temperatures of 44-45°C during the heatwave peak last week, saw the mercury drop to 32°C following the onset of monsoon rains. Similar cooling was reported across Gaya, Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur, and other cities that had been sweltering under extreme heat for weeks. (Related: Southwest Monsoon 2026 Advances Into 12 States — I…)

The cooling effect, however, comes with its own challenges. The sudden shift from extreme heat to heavy rainfall increases the risk of waterlogging and urban flooding in poorly drained cities. Patna, which experienced catastrophic urban flooding during the 2019 monsoon, has been working to improve its drainage infrastructure, but civic officials acknowledge that significant vulnerabilities remain.

The transition from heatwave to monsoon also brings health risks. The sudden increase in humidity creates ideal conditions for vector-borne diseases like dengue, malaria, and chikungunya. The Bihar health department has activated its monsoon disease surveillance programme and is conducting anti-larval spraying operations across the state.

National Monsoon Picture

Across India, the 2026 monsoon is shaping up to be a critical season. The country’s farm sector, which employs approximately 42% of the workforce and accounts for 18% of GDP, depends heavily on the spatial and temporal distribution of monsoon rainfall. A good monsoon can boost rural incomes, moderate food inflation, and support overall economic growth, while a poor monsoon can have cascading negative effects across the economy. (Related: Southwest Monsoon to Hit Kerala Around June 4 as I…)

The IMD’s seasonal forecast predicts that India will receive 103% of its long-period average rainfall this monsoon — categorised as “normal.” The forecast is supported by neutral El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) conditions in the Pacific Ocean, which typically favour normal monsoon performance over India.

However, meteorologists caution that aggregate normal rainfall can mask significant regional and temporal variations. Some areas may receive excess rainfall leading to floods, while others may face dry spells that hurt crop growth. The emerging La Niña conditions expected later in the season could intensify rainfall in the second half of the monsoon, increasing flood risks in September and October.

Impact on Crop Prices and Economy

The monsoon’s progress is being closely watched by policymakers, particularly in the context of food inflation, which has been a persistent challenge. Prices of vegetables, pulses, and cereals have remained elevated in recent months, driven partly by last year’s uneven monsoon and partly by the global energy price spike caused by the US-Iran conflict.

A good monsoon season could help moderate food prices by boosting kharif crop output, particularly for rice, pulses, and oilseeds. The Reserve Bank of India, which has been balancing inflation concerns with growth considerations, is watching monsoon developments closely as it formulates its monetary policy stance for the coming quarters.

For the families of the five lightning victims in Khagaria, however, the monsoon’s arrival carries only grief. As India welcomes the life-giving rains that sustain its agriculture and economy, the human cost of the season’s violent weather is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of communities at the frontlines of India’s climate reality.

In a significant legal development, popular educator Faisal Khan, universally known as “Khan Sir,” received a major reprieve on Monday, June 9, 2026, when a Patna district court stayed his arrest in connection with a firing incident at his coaching institute. The order came as Khan Sir’s legal team moved for anticipatory bail after police named him in an FIR related to a violent clash and alleged shooting outside the Khan Global Studies coaching centre in Patna’s Kadamkuan area.

The Incident That Shook Patna

The case stems from a violent confrontation that erupted on the night of June 2, 2026, outside the Khan Global Studies premises — one of the largest and most popular coaching institutes in Bihar, where Khan Sir teaches millions of students both in-person and through his massively popular YouTube channel with over 30 million subscribers.

According to the complaint filed by Khan Global Studies, a group of individuals allegedly associated with a rival coaching institute entered the premises, vandalised property, tore down banners and posters, assaulted security personnel, and created widespread panic. The situation escalated dramatically when gunshots were reportedly fired during the altercation.

Following the complaint, police arrested the director of the rival coaching institute along with several associates. However, the investigation took a dramatic turn after a video surfaced on social media appearing to show security guards at Khan Global Studies firing during the incident. This led to a counter-FIR being filed, this time naming Khan Sir and his security personnel.

The Court’s Order

Khan Sir’s lawyer, Arvind Kumar Mahuar, moved the Patna District Judge’s court seeking anticipatory bail, arguing that his client had no direct involvement in the firing and that the security guards acted in self-defense during a violent attack on the premises. The court, while not granting anticipatory bail immediately, provided interim protection by staying Khan Sir’s arrest.

“While granting interim protection, the court directed that police may continue questioning Faisal Khan as part of the investigation but cannot take coercive action against him, including arrest, until the anticipatory bail matter is heard and decided,” said Mahuar outside the court.

The anticipatory bail plea is expected to be heard in the coming days, with the court reserving its decision on the matter. Meanwhile, the interim protection order ensures that Khan Sir cannot be arrested, providing him and his supporters with significant relief.

Who Is Khan Sir?

For those unfamiliar with the phenomenon, Khan Sir — real name Faisal Khan — is arguably the most famous educator in India today. His journey from a small coaching class in Patna to becoming a YouTube sensation with tens of millions of followers is one of the most remarkable stories in India’s education landscape.

Khan Sir’s teaching style — energetic, humorous, and deeply engaging — has made him a cult figure among competitive exam aspirants across India. His classes on general knowledge, current affairs, and reasoning, delivered in a mix of Hindi and Bhojpuri with generous doses of humour, have made traditionally dry subjects accessible and entertaining for millions of students.

His YouTube channel, where he uploads free educational content, has become one of the most-watched Indian educational channels. Beyond YouTube, his coaching institute in Patna attracts thousands of students daily, with classes often overflowing into corridors and adjacent halls.

The Coaching Rivalry Factor

The incident has exposed the intensely competitive — and occasionally violent — nature of the coaching industry in Bihar, particularly in Patna, which has emerged as one of India’s largest hubs for competitive exam preparation. The city hosts hundreds of coaching institutes, ranging from small one-room operations to large multi-storey centres with thousands of students.

The competition for students, who pay substantial fees for coaching classes, has created a high-stakes environment where disputes between institutes are not uncommon. However, the alleged firing incident represents a dangerous escalation that has alarmed both the educational community and law enforcement.

“The coaching industry in Bihar needs serious regulation. What happened at Khan Global Studies is not just a criminal matter — it’s a symptom of an industry that has grown too fast without adequate oversight,” said Dr. Ramesh Kumar, a retired professor and education policy analyst based in Patna.

Fire Safety Notice Adds to Troubles

Adding to Khan Sir’s legal challenges, the Bihar fire service issued a notice to him on the day before the court hearing, citing alleged fire safety violations at the Khan Global Studies coaching centre. The notice, which demands compliance with fire safety norms, has been viewed by Khan Sir’s supporters as politically motivated harassment timed to coincide with the court proceedings.

“The fire safety notice is a transparent attempt to pile pressure on Khan Sir at a sensitive time. Why was this notice not issued earlier? Why now, when there is a court case?” asked a representative of the Khan Global Studies management.

Fire safety compliance has been a persistent issue across coaching institutes in Bihar and other states, with many operating from buildings that do not meet the required safety standards. The issue gained national attention after the tragic Rajkot gaming zone fire and the Delhi coaching centre basement flooding, which highlighted the dangers of inadequate safety measures in commercial educational establishments.

Public Support and Social Media

Throughout the legal proceedings, Khan Sir has enjoyed overwhelming public support, particularly on social media. The hashtag #StandWithKhanSir trended nationally on the day of the court hearing, with students, fans, and supporters from across India expressing solidarity.

Several prominent figures, including politicians, educators, and social media influencers, have spoken out in support of Khan Sir, arguing that he is being unfairly targeted. However, others have cautioned that the legal process should be allowed to take its course without public pressure influencing the outcome.

As the anticipatory bail hearing approaches, all eyes are on the Patna court. For Khan Sir, the stakes extend beyond his personal freedom — the outcome of this case could have implications for his coaching empire, his massive online following, and the broader coaching industry in Bihar. For now, the interim protection from arrest provides a crucial breathing space, but the legal battle is far from over.

Nitish Kumar on Tuesday submitted his resignation as the Chief Minister of Bihar to Governor Arif Mohammed Khan at Lok Bhavan in Patna, bringing to a close a two-decade-long political era that defined the state’s modern trajectory. The 75-year-old Janata Dal (United) leader, who first took charge as chief minister in 2005, is expected to be succeeded by a BJP leader, marking the first time the Bharatiya Janata Party will hold the top post in Bihar on its own.

Why 14 April Was Chosen for the Resignation

The date of Nitish Kumar’s resignation carries significant political and cultural symbolism. 14 April marks the birth anniversary of Dr B R Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Indian Constitution and a towering icon of the social justice movement in India. In a state where caste dynamics have historically shaped political allegiances, the decision to step down on Ambedkar Jayanti is widely seen as a deliberate move to frame the transition within a narrative of constitutional respect and social progress.

Additionally, the Hindu calendar played a role. The period of Kharmas, a roughly one-month window considered inauspicious for major decisions in Bihar, Jharkhand, and eastern Uttar Pradesh, ended on 14 April. While no senior leader publicly confirmed the astrological reasoning, local media outlets noted the convergence of the favourable date with the national holiday as key factors in the timing.

Nitish Kumar’s Legacy as Bihar’s Longest-Serving CM

Nitish Kumar’s political career stretches back to 1985. Over four decades, he built a reputation as a development-focused leader who ended what he famously called the RJD’s “jungle raj” period. His tenure is credited with transforming Bihar’s infrastructure, improving road connectivity, and advancing law and order. Under his leadership, Bihar’s GDP growth rate repeatedly outpaced the national average during key periods, and the state saw significant improvements in literacy rates and women’s safety indicators.

However, his political journey was also marked by frequent alliance shifts. He partnered with the BJP, broke away to ally with Lalu Prasad Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal, and then returned to the NDA fold. These switches, while pragmatic, drew criticism from opponents who labelled him opportunistic. His supporters, on the other hand, argued that each move was driven by the need to ensure stability in a state that celebrates its diverse cultural identity and demands inclusive governance.

The Road to Resignation

Kumar’s decision to step down became increasingly apparent after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, in which the NDA retained power at the Centre. Having secured a Rajya Sabha seat as part of a broader political arrangement, Kumar took his oath as a member of the Upper House on 10 April. Earlier that day, he chaired his last cabinet meeting and informed his colleagues about his decision to dissolve the council of ministers, a constitutional prerequisite before submitting the resignation to the governor.

Sources within the JD(U) have confirmed that Kumar will remain based in Patna and travel to Delhi for parliamentary sessions. His decision to stay in the state capital is seen as a signal that he intends to retain influence over JD(U) affairs and Bihar politics even after vacating the chief minister’s chair.

BJP Set to Lead Bihar for the First Time

With Kumar’s resignation, the BJP is poised to name its first chief minister in Bihar. The party holds a significant number of seats in the state assembly as part of the ruling NDA coalition. While the frontrunner for the post has not been officially announced, names such as Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha have been discussed in political circles. The final decision is expected to come from the BJP’s central leadership in New Delhi.

The BJP’s rise to the top post in Bihar represents a major shift in the state’s political landscape. For over two decades, the chief ministership was either held by Nitish Kumar or, before him, by Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi of the RJD. A BJP-led government would signal a new chapter, with implications for caste equations, development policy, and the state’s relationship with the Centre.

Political Reactions Across Party Lines

The resignation drew mixed reactions from across the political spectrum. BJP leaders praised Kumar’s contribution to Bihar’s development and framed the transition as a natural evolution of the NDA alliance. Congress leaders, meanwhile, questioned the circumstances of the handover, suggesting it was a pre-arranged deal that prioritised political convenience over democratic accountability.

The RJD, led by Tejashwi Yadav, called for fresh elections, arguing that the people of Bihar had voted for an NDA government led by Nitish Kumar and that any change in leadership should require a fresh mandate. Political analysts, however, noted that the constitutional mechanism allows for such transitions without elections, provided the new leader commands a majority in the assembly.

As India watched rapidly evolving political developments across several states, the Bihar transition stood out for its scale and historical significance.

What Lies Ahead for Bihar

The incoming chief minister will inherit a state that has made progress but still faces significant challenges. Bihar remains one of India’s poorest states by per capita income, and issues such as flood management along the Kosi and Gandak rivers, unemployment among the youth, and industrial development require urgent attention. The new government will also need to navigate the complex cultural and social dynamics of the state, where caste, religion, and regional identity continue to shape political outcomes.

Bihar’s next assembly elections are due in 2025, meaning the new chief minister will have limited time to establish a governance record before facing the electorate. How the BJP handles this transition, and whether it can retain the JD(U)’s voter base while expanding its own, will be closely watched by political observers across India.

A Transition of National Significance

Nitish Kumar’s resignation is not just a Bihar story. It has national implications for the NDA’s coalition strategy, the BJP’s expansion into eastern India, and the broader dynamics of Indian federalism. As the state prepares for its first BJP chief minister, the coming weeks will reveal whether this transition is a smooth handover or the beginning of a new phase of political uncertainty in one of India’s most politically active states. For now, Bihar stands at the threshold of a new era, bidding farewell to a leader who, for better or worse, defined its politics for an entire generation.
