Rishabh Pant Admits to Pressure and Welcomes Break as LSG Hit Rock Bottom in IPL 2026 After Super Over Debacle Against KKR
Lucknow Super Giants captain Rishabh Pant has admitted his team is under immense pressure and that they “need a break” after LSG hit rock bottom in IPL 2026, losing to Kolkata Knight Riders in the season’s first Super Over at the Ekana Stadium on Sunday, 26 April 2026. Pant’s captaincy decisions — particularly the choice to send Nicholas Pooran to face Sunil Narine in the Super Over — have drawn fierce criticism from fans and former cricketers, with many questioning whether the 28-year-old’s tactical nous is up to the demands of franchise leadership.
The Super Over Decision That Stunned Cricket
When the match ended in a tie after Mohammed Shami’s last-ball six, LSG had an opportunity to steal a victory in the Super Over. Captain Pant needed to make two critical decisions: who would bat and who would bowl. LSG chose to bat first, sending out Nicholas Pooran as the designated power-hitter alongside Aiden Markram.
The decision was immediately questioned when Pooran walked out to face Sunil Narine. What made the choice baffling to many observers was a well-documented piece of cricket history: the only maiden Super Over in T20 cricket history was bowled by Narine to Pooran during the Caribbean Premier League in 2014. In that encounter, Pooran failed to score a single run off five balls before being dismissed.
History repeated itself in devastating fashion. Narine bowled Pooran with his very first delivery — a beautifully flighted off-break that gripped the surface, turned past the bat, and clattered into the stumps. Markram fell next, also bowled, and Pant himself managed just a single. LSG’s Super Over total of one run is the lowest in IPL history, an unwanted record that has come to symbolise the franchise’s season of despair.
Pant’s Candid Post-Match Admission
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Pant cut a deflated figure. “We need a break,” he said candidly. “The pressure has been building match after match. Sometimes when you’re under that kind of pressure, the decisions don’t go your way. I take responsibility for the choices made on the field.”
When asked specifically about the decision to send Pooran against Narine, Pant deflected slightly, suggesting it was a collective decision. “We back our players to deliver in big moments. Nicholas has won us games before. It didn’t work out today, but I won’t single anyone out.” The response, while diplomatically sound, did little to quell the storm of criticism. The franchise has now produced several close losses this season, including the match where Punjab Kings shattered the highest chase record in another dramatic IPL 2026 encounter.
Justin Langer Defends the Decision Under Scrutiny
LSG head coach Justin Langer, the former Australia cricket coach, attempted to defend the Super Over batting order. “Nicholas Pooran is one of the most destructive batsmen in T20 cricket. He has won games from impossible positions. We backed him to deliver,” Langer said. However, he acknowledged that “in hindsight, we could have considered the specific match-up against Narine more carefully.”
Langer also addressed broader concerns about LSG’s season, noting that the team had been in competitive positions in most of their matches but had failed to close out victories. “We’re not far away,” he insisted. “A few key moments have gone against us, and in T20 cricket, those moments define results. But the effort and commitment from the squad is not in question.”
Cricket commentators were less forgiving. Former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn, who was on commentary during the match, described the decision to send Pooran as “criminal.” Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said it was “baffling” that the management appeared unaware of Pooran’s history against Narine in Super Overs.
LSG’s Season of Underperformance in IPL 2026
The Super Over loss leaves LSG with just two victories from eight matches — a record that places them last in the IPL 2026 points table. For a franchise that spent heavily at the mega auction and assembled a squad featuring Pant, Pooran, Markram, Cameron Green, and Mitchell Marsh, the underperformance has been staggering.
The problems have been multifaceted. The batting lineup, despite its star power, has rarely fired collectively, with the top order frequently failing and the middle order unable to accelerate consistently. The bowling has lacked a genuine match-winner, and the fielding has been below the standards expected of a team of this calibre.
Pant’s own form has been inconsistent. While he has produced flashes of the brilliance that made him India’s most exciting young batsman, his conversion rate has been poor — multiple starts in the 20s and 30s without a match-defining innings. As captain-wicketkeeper, the dual burden of leading the team while maintaining his own batting performance has clearly taken a toll.
Can LSG Still Make the Playoffs?
Mathematically, LSG remain alive in the playoff race, but the path is extraordinarily difficult. They likely need to win at least five of their remaining six matches, potentially with significant net run rate improvements, to have any chance of finishing in the top four. Given their current form and the quality of opposition in their remaining fixtures, this appears unlikely.
The franchise faces a crucial decision: do they continue to back Pant’s captaincy and the current combination, or do they make changes — potentially dropping underperforming overseas players or altering the batting order — in an attempt to salvage something from the season? The next match against upcoming opponents will be a defining moment for the franchise’s immediate future.
