PM Modi Launches Rs 9400 Crore Development Projects in Hyderabad Including Highway and Industrial Corridor on First Visit Since Third Term
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Hyderabad on Sunday, May 10, 2026, for a packed day of inaugurations and foundation-stone laying ceremonies involving development projects worth approximately Rs 9,400 crore. The visit marks Modi’s first trip to Hyderabad since beginning his historic third consecutive term as Prime Minister and comes a day after he attended the swearing-in ceremony of West Bengal’s first BJP Chief Minister.
The Hyderabad visit underscores the BJP’s growing interest in Telangana, a state where the party has been steadily expanding its organisational presence and electoral footprint over the past several years. With municipal elections and the next state assembly elections on the horizon, the high-visibility infrastructure push signals the Centre’s intent to position itself as a partner in Telangana’s development story.
Key Projects Launched
Hyderabad-Panaji Economic Corridor: NH-167 Four-Laning
The centrepiece of Modi’s Hyderabad agenda was the laying of the foundation stone for the four-laning of National Highway 167 from Gudebellur to Mahbubnagar on the Hyderabad-Panaji Economic Corridor. Estimated at over Rs 3,175 crore, this project is expected to dramatically improve road connectivity between Telangana and Karnataka, reducing travel time and supporting industrial growth along the corridor.
The NH-167 four-laning project is part of the larger Bharatmala Pariyojana, the Centre’s flagship highway development programme aimed at creating economic corridors, inter-corridor routes, and feeder routes across India. Once completed, the improved highway is expected to facilitate smoother movement of goods and people between the Deccan Plateau’s major economic centres, benefiting industries ranging from agriculture to manufacturing.
Zaheerabad Industrial Area
Modi also laid the foundation stone for the Zaheerabad Industrial Area in Sangareddy district, a major project under the Hyderabad-Nagpur Industrial Corridor being developed by the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (DMICDC). The project, spread across 3,245 acres at a cost of over Rs 2,350 crore, is expected to attract investments of nearly Rs 10,000 crore and generate employment opportunities for thousands of people in the region.
The Zaheerabad Industrial Area will include world-class infrastructure including internal roads, water supply systems, power distribution networks, effluent treatment plants, and a logistics hub. The location was chosen for its strategic position along the Hyderabad-Mumbai highway, providing easy access to both the Telangana capital and Maharashtra’s industrial heartland.
Additional Projects
The Prime Minister also inaugurated and dedicated several other projects during the visit, including:
- Railway infrastructure upgrades along the Hyderabad-Wadi and Secunderabad-Kazipet sections
- New Kendriya Vidyalaya campus and educational facilities in Medchal-Malkajgiri district
- Urban water supply enhancements under the Jal Jeevan Mission covering several districts
- Technology hub expansion in the HITEC City corridor, building on Hyderabad’s position as India’s leading IT destination
Modi Targets Congress and DMK in Speech
In his address at the event, Modi went beyond infrastructure announcements to deliver sharp political attacks on the opposition Congress party. Calling Congress a “parasite,” the Prime Minister accused the party of attaching itself to regional parties for survival while contributing nothing to governance or development.
The attack came in the context of Congress’s recent separation from its long-standing alliance with the DMK in Tamil Nadu, where the party chose to back Vijay’s TVK in the government formation process. Modi suggested that Congress’s pattern of switching alliances based on convenience demonstrated a lack of ideological commitment and governance capability.
“Congress is a party that has become a parasite,” Modi said. “It attaches itself to whoever is in power in a state, feeds off their strength, and contributes nothing in return. The people of India have seen through this game, which is why they have given Congress its worst-ever results in election after election.”
The comments are part of the BJP’s broader strategy of maintaining aggressive political messaging even during development-focused events. The party has been riding high after its historic West Bengal victory and is keen to use the momentum to expand into southern states where its presence has traditionally been limited.
Telangana’s Development Trajectory
Telangana, India’s youngest state formed in 2014, has emerged as one of the country’s fastest-growing economies, driven by the information technology sector, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and a booming real estate market. Hyderabad consistently ranks among India’s top cities for foreign direct investment and has attracted major campuses from global technology giants including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Apple.
However, the state also faces challenges including agricultural distress in rural districts, infrastructure gaps in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, and the need for diversification beyond the IT sector. The Centre’s investment of Rs 9,400 crore in infrastructure projects is aimed at addressing some of these gaps while deepening the economic integration between Telangana and neighbouring states.
State-level BJP leaders have been positioning the Centre’s investments as evidence that Telangana benefits more from having a cooperative relationship with the ruling party at the Centre. This narrative is designed to build the case for the BJP as a viable alternative in the state, where the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) under K. Chandrashekar Rao and the Congress party have been the dominant political forces.
Economic Impact Assessment
Economists estimate that the Rs 9,400 crore investment package announced by Modi could generate a multiplier effect of 2.5x to 3x in economic activity over the next five to seven years. The highway project alone is expected to reduce logistics costs by approximately 15-20 per cent for businesses along the corridor, while the Zaheerabad Industrial Area could create direct employment for 25,000 to 30,000 people once fully operational.
The investment also aligns with the Centre’s broader strategy of promoting industrial decentralisation away from saturated urban centres. By developing industrial infrastructure along economic corridors, the government aims to create employment opportunities closer to rural populations, reducing migration pressures on major cities.
As Modi departed Hyderabad on Sunday evening, the political and economic significance of the visit was clear: the BJP is serious about expanding its southern footprint, and it is backing that ambition with substantial central investments that aim to change the development calculus in states where the party has historically been a minor player.
