The Ayodhya Ram Mandir donation controversy has escalated dramatically with the case reaching the Supreme Court of India, amid allegations of missing donations, financial irregularities, and demands for an independent investigation into the funds collected by the Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. The controversy, which has quickly become one of the most politically charged issues in the country, has prompted the Uttar Pradesh government to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) even as opposition parties demand a court-monitored probe.

The Supreme Court petition seeks transparency, accountability, and a thorough investigation into alleged irregularities regarding the temple trust’s finances. The temple, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi in January 2024 after a decades-long legal and political battle, has received enormous donations from devotees across India and the world — making the management of these funds a matter of national significance and religious sensitivity.

What Are the Allegations?

The controversy centres on allegations that donations made by devotees at the Ram Mandir have gone unaccounted for, with claims of financial irregularities in the collection, recording, and management of temple offerings. Specific allegations include discrepancies between the volume of donations received at the temple and the amounts recorded in official accounts, as well as concerns about the handling of cash offerings, jewellery, and other valuable items donated by pilgrims.

The allegations first surfaced through local reports and social media, before gaining traction when political leaders — including opposition MPs — demanded a formal investigation. The temple trust initially dismissed the claims as politically motivated, but the mounting pressure eventually led to the Uttar Pradesh government constituting an SIT to investigate.

Delhi-based IPS officers have been dispatched to Ayodhya to conduct the investigation, with five individuals already questioned and preliminary recoveries of several crore rupees reported. BJP leader Vinay Katiyar was among those calling for action, stating plainly that “these are all thieves — remove them.”

The Political Battle

The donation controversy has become a political flashpoint, with opposition parties seizing the opportunity to challenge the BJP’s ownership of the Ram Mandir narrative. Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad, the MP from Ayodhya, has demanded that the investigation be conducted by an independent panel under Supreme Court supervision, arguing that the state-government-constituted SIT cannot be trusted to conduct an impartial inquiry.

Prasad demanded that the Ram Mandir Trust be dissolved and all office-bearers removed from their positions to prevent them from influencing the investigation. “This issue is not limited merely to the Trust or the state but is deeply connected to the faith of crores of devotees,” he stated at a press conference in Ayodhya.

For the BJP, the controversy is particularly uncomfortable because the party has built much of its political identity around the Ram Mandir movement. Any suggestion that donations made by devout Hindus were mismanaged or stolen strikes at the heart of the emotional and spiritual connection between the party and its base. The BJP’s response has been to support the SIT investigation while characterising the opposition’s demands as attempts to politicise a sacred institution.

The Trust’s Response

The Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust has maintained that its finances are managed transparently and in accordance with legal requirements. Trust officials have pointed to regular audits, digital payment systems, and security infrastructure as evidence of their commitment to accountability.

However, the trust’s response has not fully addressed the specific allegations, particularly regarding the handling of cash donations — which constitute a significant portion of temple offerings and are inherently more difficult to track and verify than digital payments. The gap between the trust’s assurances and the investigating officers’ actions — including interrogations and recoveries — suggests that the investigation is uncovering matters that require explanation.

Legal and Constitutional Dimensions

The Supreme Court’s involvement adds a critical legal dimension to the controversy. The Ram Mandir itself was the subject of one of the most significant Supreme Court verdicts in Indian history — the 2019 Ayodhya judgment that paved the way for the temple’s construction. The court directed the creation of the trust to oversee the temple’s construction and management, making it arguably the most high-profile religious institution in the country and one that carries the court’s imprimatur.

If the court agrees to hear the petition and orders a monitored investigation, it would signal that the judiciary considers the allegations serious enough to warrant oversight beyond the state government’s SIT. Such a step would have significant political implications, particularly in the context of upcoming state elections in Uttar Pradesh.

For the millions of devotees who contributed to the Ram Mandir — often modest amounts given with deep faith and emotion — the controversy is painful. The demand for transparency is not partisan; it reflects a fundamental expectation that donations made in the name of faith will be managed with integrity and accountability. Whatever the investigation reveals, the temple’s credibility and the trust placed in its custodians hang in the balance.
