Leaders from 23 opposition parties are meeting in New Delhi on Monday, 8 June 2026, for a crucial strategy session of the INDIA bloc — the alliance’s first major gathering after a series of assembly election setbacks and growing internal tensions. The meeting, scheduled at the Constitution Club at 12 noon, will test the coalition’s ability to project a united front against the ruling BJP ahead of state elections and the 2029 Lok Sabha polls.

However, the gathering has been overshadowed by the conspicuous absence of two significant allies: the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), a ruling party in Tamil Nadu, and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has faced its own political turbulence. Their decision to skip the meeting has raised fresh questions about the cohesion of India’s largest opposition formation.

Who Is Attending

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh confirmed the attendance of 23 parties in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “23 political parties have confirmed participation in the INDIA janbandhan meeting at Constitution Club, New Delhi on Monday June 8, 2026, at 12 noon,” Ramesh said. “Like India, the INDIA janbandhan continues to stand united through its diversity.”

Among the senior leaders expected to attend are Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee (who left for Delhi on Sunday), Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, who is expected to join via video conferencing, according to party spokesperson Sanjay Raut.

Abhishek Banerjee of the TMC is also expected to attend, along with representatives from the CPI(M), CPI, NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, and the Rashtriya Janata Dal, among others.

Why DMK and AAP Are Absent

The DMK’s absence is particularly significant given that it is one of the INDIA bloc’s strongest regional partners, governing Tamil Nadu with a comfortable majority. While party sources did not provide a detailed explanation, political analysts note that the DMK has historically maintained a degree of independence from Congress-led formations and may be recalibrating its position following recent electoral dynamics in southern India.

The AAP, led by Arvind Kejriwal, is also unlikely to attend. The party has been focused on its own legal and political challenges and has distanced itself from several INDIA bloc decisions in recent months. The absence of both parties suggests that the alliance, formed in 2023 to challenge the BJP’s dominance, continues to struggle with the fundamental challenge of keeping all its constituents aligned.

CPI(M) Attends Despite Tensions with Congress

Adding to the internal friction, the CPI(M) — which is attending the meeting — has publicly expressed displeasure with Congress. General Secretary M.A. Baby wrote to Kharge seeking clarification over repeated allegations by Congress leaders that the CPI(M) had an understanding with the BJP during the Kerala assembly election campaign. Baby warned that such remarks could “weaken the trust and unity within the opposition alliance.”

Despite the tensions, the party decided to participate and will be represented by Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas. The decision suggests that the CPI(M) wants to remain within the alliance framework while simultaneously pressing for a resolution to its grievances with Congress.

The internal dynamics of India’s political landscape have been turbulent, with developments such as the BJP’s cabinet expansion in West Bengal under Suvendu Adhikari shifting the balance of power and putting additional pressure on the opposition to present a credible alternative.

Key Agenda Items

While the formal agenda has not been publicly announced, sources within the alliance say the meeting is expected to cover several critical issues:

Electoral strategy for upcoming state elections — Multiple states go to polls in the next 18 months, and the bloc needs a coordinated approach to seat sharing and campaign strategy.

The 2029 Lok Sabha roadmap — With just three years until the next general election, the alliance must begin laying the groundwork for its challenge to the BJP.

Response to government policies — Including the economic impact of the rising cost of living driven by factors such as LPG price hikes, the handling of the NEET controversy, and India’s foreign policy direction amidst the ongoing West Asia crisis.

Internal cohesion — Addressing the trust deficit highlighted by the CPI(M)’s letter and managing the expectations of smaller alliance partners who feel sidelined by Congress.

The Bigger Picture

The INDIA bloc was formed in June 2023 as a grand opposition alliance to challenge the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. While the alliance performed better than expected in some states, it failed to dislodge the BJP-led NDA from power. Since then, the alliance has faced a series of setbacks, including electoral losses in state elections and a gradual weakening of inter-party coordination.

Political changes across the country — including the recent Karnataka cabinet crisis resolved by DK Shivakumar — have demonstrated that even within Congress-governed states, managing factional politics remains a significant challenge. The ability of the INDIA bloc to function as a disciplined, nationwide opposition will depend on whether leaders like Mamata Banerjee, Rahul Gandhi, and Akhilesh Yadav can bridge ideological and strategic differences.

Monday’s meeting is being seen as a litmus test. If the bloc can emerge with a clear, unified message and a concrete action plan, it will signal that the alliance remains a viable political force. If the differences remain unresolved, it may accelerate the fragmentation that the BJP has consistently sought to exploit.

The Aam Aadmi Party has delivered a commanding performance in Punjab’s 2026 municipal elections, sweeping civic polls across the state with over 131 seats as counting progressed through May 29. The results represent a resounding vote of confidence in Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s governance and a stunning setback for opposition parties who had mounted an aggressive campaign alleging electoral irregularities.

As of the latest trends, AAP leads with 131 seats across 102 local bodies — comprising eight major municipal corporations, 75 municipal councils, and 20 nagar panchayats. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Congress are locked in a distant battle for second place with approximately 28 seats each, while the Bharatiya Janata Party has managed just 2 seats in what appears to be a negligible showing.

Scale of AAP’s Victory

The scale of AAP’s dominance becomes clear when examining the numbers. A total of 22.38 lakh citizens cast their ballots across 3,833 polling booths to decide the governance of Punjab’s urban local bodies. AAP’s 131+ seats represent a majority in the vast majority of these bodies, giving the party near-complete control over urban governance in the state.

The party’s strength was evident even before counting began — 80 AAP candidates were elected unopposed across several municipalities, with 63 of these being AAP nominees. This “uncontested” dominance suggests a level of organisational strength and grassroots support that opposition parties were unable to match.

In the eight major municipal corporations — including Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, and Patiala — AAP has established clear leads. Early trends from Bathinda, where at least 10 candidates were declared winners unopposed with 9 being AAP nominees, exemplify the party’s ground-level consolidation.

Opposition’s Dismal Performance

Congress, which governed Punjab from 2017 to 2022 under Captain Amarinder Singh and briefly under Charanjit Singh Channi, has been reduced to a marginal force in the state’s urban politics. With approximately 28 seats, the party’s showing is particularly disappointing given its historical strength in Punjab’s cities. The party managed an early lead only in the Kapurthala municipal corporation, with most other urban centres going decisively to AAP.

The Shiromani Akali Dal, once the dominant political force in Punjab, finds itself in a similar predicament. Tied with Congress at around 28 seats, the party’s inability to capitalise on anti-incumbency — if any — raises serious questions about its organisational health and leadership under Sukhbir Singh Badal.

The BJP’s showing is the most striking. With just 2 seats in a state where it once shared power as part of the SAD-BJP alliance, the party appears to have virtually no urban political base in Punjab. This result comes despite the BJP’s strong national position and suggests that Punjab’s political landscape remains fundamentally different from the rest of northern India.

Allegations and Controversies

The election was not without controversy. Leaders from Congress, SAD, and BJP had submitted formal grievances to the State Election Commission alleging systemic irregularities during the polling process. Accusations ranged from voter intimidation and disruption of ballot secrecy to what opposition leaders described as the “weaponisation of the police force” on polling day.

AAP dismissed these allegations as the “desperation of parties that know they’ve lost the people’s trust.” Party leaders pointed to the smooth conduct of polls at the vast majority of booths and the presence of election observers as evidence that the process was fair and transparent.

The State Election Commission has not yet formally responded to the opposition’s complaints, though officials indicated that all grievances would be examined as per standard protocol.

Significance for AAP’s National Ambitions

For AAP, the Punjab civic poll results carry significance far beyond local governance. The party, led nationally by Arvind Kejriwal, has been seeking to establish itself as a credible national alternative. Punjab remains its only state government, and a strong showing in civic elections validates the governance model that CM Bhagwant Mann has implemented — focused on education, healthcare, and urban infrastructure improvements.

The results also provide ammunition for AAP ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, where the party will seek a second term. A dominant civic poll performance suggests that the urban voter base remains firmly with the party, though rural areas — which were not part of these elections — will tell their own story.

AAP’s sweep of the unopposed seats — 63 out of 80 candidates elected without contest — indicates that the party has built a cadre-based organisation in Punjab that can field credible candidates even at the ward level. This ground-level infrastructure has been a weakness for the party in other states and represents a genuine achievement in Punjab.

What This Means for Punjab

With control of both the state government and the vast majority of urban local bodies, AAP now has an unprecedented mandate to implement its vision for Punjab’s cities. Key challenges facing Punjab’s urban areas — including water supply, waste management, road infrastructure, and urban flooding — can now be addressed through coordinated state-local governance.

The party has promised an urban development blueprint that includes smart city initiatives, improved public transport, and the regularisation of colonies. Whether it can deliver on these promises while managing the state’s fiscal challenges — including the legacy of debt inherited from previous governments — will determine its political future in the state.

For now, May 29 belongs to AAP in Punjab. The question is whether this urban dominance can be sustained and extended to the rural heartland before the next assembly election.

Election Commission Orders Repolling at 15 Polling Stations in South 24 Parganas District

Repolling began at 15 polling stations across West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district on Saturday, 2 May 2026, after the Election Commission of India (ECI) ordered fresh voting following multiple reports of irregularities during the second phase of assembly elections held on 29 April. The affected booths are spread across two constituencies — 11 in Magrahat Paschim and 4 in Diamond Harbour — and voting was conducted from 7 AM to 6 PM under heightened security and strict monitoring.

The ECI’s decision to nullify voting at these 15 stations came after special observers appointed by the commission conducted detailed inspections and identified what were officially described as “disturbing findings.” The move adds another layer of controversy to the West Bengal assembly elections 2026, which have been among the most bitterly contested in the state’s history.

What Irregularities Were Found at the 15 Booths

According to sources within the Election Commission, the complaints that triggered the repolling order included several serious allegations. Multiple CCTV cameras installed at polling stations were reported to have been deliberately disabled or malfunctioned during voting hours, making it impossible to verify the conduct of polling through video evidence. In some booths, party symbols on electronic voting machines (EVMs) were allegedly obscured with tape, potentially influencing voter choice by making it difficult to identify and select the preferred candidate.

Returning Officers from both constituencies submitted detailed reports to the ECI documenting the irregularities. Opposition parties, primarily the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), had demanded repolling at a much larger number of booths, alleging widespread manipulation in several Phase 2 constituencies. However, the poll body limited its order to 15 stations based on verified inputs from observers and returning officers, rejecting demands for broader repolling.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC), which is the ruling party in West Bengal under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has denied all allegations of irregularities, calling them politically motivated attempts by the opposition to undermine the credibility of the electoral process.

Security Arrangements for the Repoll

The Election Commission deployed enhanced security measures for Saturday’s repolling. Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) were deployed at all 15 polling stations, maintaining the same level of paramilitary deployment that was in place during the original Phase 2 voting. Over 700 CAPF companies remain stationed in West Bengal ahead of the 4 May counting day to prevent post-poll violence.

Polling officers at the 15 repolling stations were instructed to ensure that all CCTV cameras were functional throughout the day, with live feeds being monitored by observers in real time. Additional micro-observers were posted at each station to document the voting process and flag any irregularities immediately. The EVMs used in Saturday’s repolling were fresh machines that had been tested and sealed in the presence of representatives from all contesting parties.

Voter Turnout During the Repoll

Early reports indicated strong voter turnout at the repolling stations. By mid-afternoon, Magrahat Paschim had recorded a turnout of approximately 38 per cent, while Diamond Harbour was at approximately 35 per cent. Election officials expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the repoll, noting that no significant complaints had been received during the day. The relatively lower turnout compared to the original polling day — the Phase 2 overall turnout had exceeded 80 per cent — was partly attributed to voter fatigue and the inconvenience of a second polling day on a weekend.

Broader Context of the West Bengal 2026 Elections

The repolling controversy is the latest in a series of disputes that have defined the West Bengal 2026 assembly elections. The two-phase election — covering all 294 assembly constituencies — saw Phase 1 record a historic 92.59 per cent voter turnout on 25 April and Phase 2 on 29 April cover the remaining 142 constituencies. The election has been characterised by intense polarisation between the TMC and the BJP, with allegations of booth capturing, voter intimidation, and EVM manipulation from both sides.

Exit polls released on 1 May predicted a tight contest, with most surveys giving the BJP a narrow edge with approximately 150 to 192 seats in the 294-member assembly. The TMC, which has governed West Bengal since 2011, is projected to win between 90 and 130 seats in most surveys, though the party has dismissed exit polls as unreliable predictors of actual results.

The counting of votes for both phases is scheduled for 4 May 2026, and the political temperature in the state remains high. Mamata Banerjee has made repeated visits to the strongrooms where EVMs are stored, alleging that the security of the machines could be compromised. The BJP has accused her of attempting to undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

What the Repolling Means for the Final Results

While 15 booths represent a tiny fraction of the total polling infrastructure in West Bengal — Phase 2 alone involved thousands of polling stations — the outcome in closely contested constituencies can hinge on a few hundred votes. Both Magrahat Paschim and Diamond Harbour are seats where the TMC and BJP have historically been competitive, and a swing of even a few percentage points at the repolling stations could influence the final tally.

The repolling results will be counted alongside the original votes on 4 May. Election Commission officials confirmed that the process for integrating repolling data into the overall count follows established protocols and that there would be no delay in the declaration of results due to the repoll.

The credibility of India’s electoral machinery remains a matter of intense debate, and the political transitions across multiple states in 2026 have kept the Election Commission at the centre of public scrutiny. The commission’s decision to order repolling — while limited in scope — has been viewed by some analysts as an attempt to demonstrate its commitment to free and fair elections in the face of mounting criticism from opposition parties.

All eyes now turn to 4 May, when the votes that will determine West Bengal’s next government will be counted.

Special Labour Day Session Descends Into Chaos Over Intoxication Allegations Against Chief Minister

A major political controversy erupted during a special one-day session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Friday, 1 May 2026, after the Congress-led opposition accused Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann of arriving at the state assembly in an intoxicated state. The allegations triggered a dramatic walkout by Congress MLAs, demands for an alcohol test on all legislators, and sharp counter-accusations from the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), turning what was meant to be a solemn International Labour Day observance into a full-blown political showdown.

The session had begun on a smooth note, with the assembly convened to discuss workers’ rights and welfare measures. However, proceedings spiralled rapidly when Chief Minister Mann objected to Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira allegedly using a mobile phone inside the house — a violation of assembly rules. What followed was an explosive exchange that has dominated political discourse in Punjab and across India.

How the Confrontation Unfolded

According to multiple accounts from legislators present in the house, the confrontation began when Mann publicly called out Khaira for using his phone during proceedings. Khaira, a senior Congress MLA, responded by launching a sharp personal attack against the Chief Minister, alleging that Mann himself appeared to be under the influence of alcohol while addressing the assembly.

The accusation was quickly backed by Leader of Opposition Pratap Singh Bajwa, who formally demanded that an alcohol test be conducted on all MLAs present in the house, including the Chief Minister. Bajwa argued that the sanctity of the Vidhan Sabha — described as a “temple of democracy” — required that all elected representatives be in a fit state to participate in legislative proceedings. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), which also sits in opposition, supported the demand, calling the situation “deeply shameful.”

When the ruling party refused to entertain the demand, the Congress staged a walkout from the assembly. The opposition’s departure effectively ended any meaningful legislative discussion for the remainder of the session, with the ruling AAP completing the session’s agenda with its majority.

Opposition Lays Out Formal Charges

Following the walkout, opposition leaders held a press conference outside the assembly, laying out a string of formal charges. They alleged that the Chief Minister entered the assembly in an inebriated state. Second, they claimed that his conduct amounted to disrespecting the temple of democracy. Third, they argued that he refused the opposition’s reasonable demand for an alcohol test on all MLAs. Fourth, they stated that the entire episode had lowered the prestige of the house and undermined the sanctity of legislative proceedings.

Punjab Minister Harpal Cheema, responding on behalf of the AAP government, dismissed the allegations as “baseless and politically motivated.” Cheema accused the Congress of attempting to divert public attention from a land encroachment case allegedly linked to Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira. He characterised the entire incident as a manufactured controversy designed to embarrass the state government.

The Political Context in Punjab

This is not the first time Bhagwant Mann has faced allegations related to alcohol consumption. Since taking office as Chief Minister in March 2022 after AAP’s landslide victory in Punjab, Mann has periodically been the subject of opposition claims about his personal conduct. Mann, a former comedian and television personality, has publicly spoken about giving up alcohol after entering politics, and AAP supporters have consistently defended him against what they describe as a smear campaign by rival parties.

The incident takes on added significance because of the broader political realignment underway in Punjab. The AAP, which swept Punjab with 92 of 117 seats in 2022, has faced growing criticism over governance issues, including farmers’ concerns, drug policy implementation, and the state’s fiscal health. The party has also been weakened nationally by the defection of several Rajya Sabha MPs to the BJP in recent months, and political transitions across multiple Indian states have intensified pressure on regional parties.

The Congress, which governed Punjab for decades before its defeat in 2022, has been attempting to rebuild its base in the state. Targeting the Chief Minister personally — particularly on an issue that resonates with Punjab’s complicated relationship with substance abuse — is seen as part of this broader strategy to weaken AAP’s credibility among voters.

Social Media Eruption and Public Reaction

The controversy quickly went viral on social media platforms, with video clips from the assembly session being shared widely. Hashtags related to Bhagwant Mann trended on X (formerly Twitter) throughout Friday evening and into Saturday. Supporters of AAP circulated counter-clips arguing that Mann appeared perfectly composed, while opposition supporters highlighted moments they claimed showed signs of impairment.

Political commentators noted that in the absence of an actual alcohol test, the allegations remain unverified and are essentially one party’s word against another. The Speaker of the Punjab Assembly has not issued any formal statement on the matter, and there is no constitutional or procedural mechanism that requires sitting legislators or chief ministers to submit to sobriety testing before entering the house.

The charged political atmosphere across India in this election season has meant that even incidents that might ordinarily be contained within state-level politics have acquired national significance. News channels devoted extensive prime-time coverage to the Punjab controversy, with panel debates featuring political representatives from multiple parties.

What Happens Next

The opposition has indicated that it plans to raise the issue during the next scheduled session of the Punjab Assembly and may move a formal privilege motion. Legal experts, however, have noted that privilege motions related to the personal conduct of the Chief Minister outside of legislative matters have limited precedent and are unlikely to succeed in a house where AAP holds an overwhelming majority.

For Bhagwant Mann and the AAP, the immediate task is damage control. The party is expected to focus on governance achievements and welfare schemes in the coming days to shift the narrative away from the personal allegations. For the opposition, the incident provides ammunition for an ongoing campaign to portray the AAP government as unserious about governance.

The Labour Day session that was meant to celebrate workers’ rights will instead be remembered for a political explosion that underscored the intensity of rivalry between Punjab’s political parties.

Voting began across Gujarat on Sunday, 26 April 2026, in what is the state’s largest grassroots democratic exercise, with approximately 4.19 crore eligible voters casting ballots to elect representatives to 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats, and 260 taluka panchayats. The State Election Commission (SEC) has set up polling stations across 7,253 wards, and voting is being conducted using electronic voting machines (EVMs) from 7 AM to 6 PM.

Scale of the Elections

The elections encompass 9,992 seats across urban local bodies as well as district and taluka panchayats, making this the single largest local body election in Gujarat’s recent history. Out of the state’s total 4.4 crore registered voters, approximately 4.19 crore are eligible to participate. By-elections are also being held simultaneously for 13 seats in 11 municipalities.

For the first time, elections are being held in nine newly constituted municipal corporations. While the BJP currently controls the six existing corporations — Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, and Jamnagar — the new corporations of Karamsad-Anand, Gandhidham, Nadiad, Navsari, Porbandar, Mehsana, Morbi, Vapi, and Surendranagar are virgin territory where all parties are fighting to establish dominance.

Multi-Cornered Contest Expected

A multi-cornered contest is expected among the BJP, Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), smaller regional outfits, and a large number of independent candidates. The BJP enters the elections as the dominant force in Gujarat, having won the state assembly elections convincingly and holding all six existing municipal corporations. However, local body polls in India often produce surprises, with hyper-local issues such as water supply, roads, sanitation, and waste management taking precedence over national political narratives.

The AAP, which made significant inroads in Gujarat during the 2022 assembly elections, faces an existential challenge after the dramatic exit of Raghav Chadha and six AAP MPs to the BJP earlier this week. The party’s organisational capacity in Gujarat has been tested by the national-level turmoil, and its performance in these local polls will be closely watched as a barometer of its grassroots relevance.

Key Battlegrounds

Ahmedabad, the state’s largest city and a BJP stronghold, is the marquee contest. The municipal corporation election here covers 64 wards and is seen as a prestige battle for the ruling party. Surat, India’s diamond capital, and Vadodara, with its mix of industrial and academic populations, are also closely contested. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who cast his vote in Ahmedabad on Sunday morning, has personally overseen the party’s campaign in the city.

The results of the West Bengal assembly elections earlier this month have already demonstrated that high voter turnout can produce surprising outcomes. In Gujarat, where the BJP machinery is traditionally well-oiled at the grassroots level, the Congress is banking on anti-incumbency at the local level — pointing to unresolved issues of waterlogging, traffic congestion, and inadequate public transport in several cities.

Infrastructure and Governance on the Ballot

Voters across Gujarat’s urban areas are weighing in on years of municipal governance, with issues varying significantly by city. In Ahmedabad, the Sabarmati riverfront development has been a point of pride for the BJP, but critics argue that peripheral areas have been neglected. In Surat, the city’s famed cleanliness rankings face scrutiny amid rapid population growth. In the newly formed corporations, residents are voting for structured governance for the first time, having previously been administered by smaller municipal bodies.

State Election Commissioner S. Murali Krishna confirmed that adequate security arrangements have been made, with police and paramilitary forces deployed at all sensitive and hyper-sensitive polling stations. The counting of votes is scheduled for 28 April 2026, and results are expected by the evening.

National Significance

Also Read: Economy & Governance

While local body elections are primarily about municipal governance, the Gujarat polls carry national significance as a test of political momentum. For the BJP, a dominant performance would reinforce its stranglehold on Prime Minister Modi’s home state. For the Congress, winning even a handful of municipal corporations would signal a revival. And for the AAP, anything less than a respectable showing could accelerate questions about the party’s future after the major political realignments of 2026.

The results on 28 April will provide the clearest picture yet of where Gujarat’s political winds are blowing as the country heads into an eventful second half of 2026.

In one of the most dramatic political realignments of 2026, Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha on 24 April announced that seven Aam Aadmi Party members of the Upper House — more than two-thirds of the party’s 10-member contingent — had formally merged with the Bharatiya Janata Party. The move, executed under the Tenth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, ensures that none of the defecting MPs face disqualification from Parliament.

Apart from Chadha, the six other MPs who signed the merger petition include Ashok Mittal, Sandeep Pathak, Harbhajan Singh, Rajinder Gupta, Vikram Sahney, and Swati Maliwal. The signed documents were submitted to Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar early on Friday morning, according to Chadha’s statement at a joint press conference.

Why the Two-Thirds Rule Matters

India’s anti-defection law, enshrined in the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, ordinarily disqualifies any legislator who voluntarily leaves the party on whose ticket they were elected. However, the law provides one critical exception: if two-thirds or more of a party’s legislators in a House decide to merge with another party, the merger is considered constitutionally valid and no member faces disqualification.

With 10 AAP MPs in the Rajya Sabha, the magic number for a valid merger was seven — precisely the number who signed the petition. This constitutional manoeuvre has been used in Indian politics before, but rarely with such public drama. The move has significant implications for the India Census 2026 and its implications for political delimitation heading into state election season.

What Led to the Split

The rift had been simmering for weeks. Just days before the merger announcement, AAP’s national leadership removed Chadha from his position as the party’s deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha. The party alleged that Chadha had failed to raise important issues against the ruling government during parliamentary sessions, a charge Chadha dismissed as politically motivated.

Chadha, a chartered accountant by training who rose to prominence during the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, had been one of AAP’s most recognisable faces. His departure signals a deeper malaise within the party, which has struggled to maintain its national relevance after several state-level political realignments in 2026, including the BJP-engineered transition in Bihar.

Swati Maliwal, another high-profile defector, had publicly clashed with senior AAP leaders in 2024 over allegations of assault at the chief minister’s residence. Her decision to join the merger was widely anticipated by political observers.

AAP’s Response and Legal Options

AAP’s remaining Rajya Sabha MP, Sanjay Singh, immediately announced that the party would seek the disqualification of all seven members. Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Singh called the merger a “betrayal of the people who voted for honest politics” and said AAP’s legal team was already preparing petitions.

However, constitutional experts believe AAP’s legal challenge faces an uphill battle. The Tenth Schedule explicitly permits mergers when two-thirds of a legislative party agree, and historical precedent — including the 2019 merger of TDP legislators with the BJP in Andhra Pradesh — suggests that courts have upheld such moves.

Meanwhile, senior AAP leader Atishi Marlena compared the defectors to “those who abandon a sinking ship” and accused the BJP of orchestrating the split through a combination of threats and inducements. The BJP has denied these allegations, with spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad calling the merger “a natural consequence of AAP’s ideological bankruptcy.”

Social Media Fallout

The merger triggered a massive social media response. Within 24 hours of the announcement, Raghav Chadha reportedly lost over one million followers on Instagram, according to social media tracking platforms. The hashtag #RaghavChadha trended at number one on X (formerly Twitter) for over 18 hours, while #AAPBJPMerger remained in the top five trending topics throughout the day.

Former cricketer Harbhajan Singh, one of the defecting MPs, faced particular scrutiny online. Singh, who was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by AAP in 2022, was criticised by fans who accused him of prioritising political convenience over the party that gave him a parliamentary platform. The developments closely follow the high-stakes West Bengal and Tamil Nadu assembly elections of 2026 that have reshaped India’s political map.

Impact on Rajya Sabha Numbers

The merger strengthens the BJP’s position in the Rajya Sabha significantly. The NDA coalition’s Upper House numbers have been a persistent challenge for the ruling alliance, often forcing it to build issue-by-issue consensus on legislation. With seven additional MPs, the BJP-led bloc moves closer to the majority mark, potentially easing the passage of contentious bills in future sessions.

For AAP, the loss is devastating. From 10 Rajya Sabha members, the party is now reduced to three — Sanjay Singh and two others who refused to sign the merger document. This makes AAP one of the smallest parties in the Upper House and significantly diminishes its ability to influence legislative proceedings. The party’s decline mirrors a broader pattern of shifting cultural and political dynamics across India.

What Comes Next

The merger is expected to have ripple effects across multiple state elections scheduled for later this year. In Punjab, where AAP currently holds the state government, the defection of prominent leaders like Ashok Mittal and Rajinder Gupta — both influential Punjab-based industrialists — could weaken the party’s fundraising capabilities and corporate support base.

Political analysts suggest the merger may also accelerate defections at the state level. If AAP MLAs in Delhi and Punjab perceive the party as a declining force, individual legislators may begin exploring options with the BJP or Congress ahead of the next round of assembly elections.

As India’s political landscape continues to evolve in 2026, the AAP-BJP Rajya Sabha merger stands as a reminder that in Indian democracy, constitutional provisions can reshape political equations overnight. Whether this move represents a pragmatic consolidation of opposition forces into a ruling coalition or a cynical subversion of the anti-defection spirit will be debated for months to come.
