										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>India has taken a giant leap in the global artificial intelligence race with the launch of Bharat Gen AI — the country&#8217;s first government-funded, multi-modal Large Language Model (LLM) that supports all 22 official Indian languages. Developed by IIT Bombay in collaboration with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the model represents India&#8217;s most ambitious effort to build &#8220;Sovereign AI&#8221; — AI infrastructure designed, trained, and controlled within the country&#8217;s borders.</p>
<p>The announcement, which has been making waves in technology circles throughout June 2026, positions India alongside the United States, China, the European Union, and a handful of other nations that have invested in developing indigenous AI models. Unlike commercially available models like OpenAI&#8217;s GPT, Google&#8217;s Gemini, or Meta&#8217;s Llama, Bharat Gen AI is designed specifically for Indian languages, contexts, and use cases — addressing a gap that global models have struggled to fill.</p>
<h2>What Makes Bharat Gen AI Different</h2>
<p>The model&#8217;s most distinctive feature is its deep multilingual capability. While global LLMs support Indian languages to varying degrees, they often struggle with accuracy, idiom, and cultural context — particularly in less-resourced languages like Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, and Santali. Bharat Gen AI has been trained on curated datasets in all 22 languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, with a focus on quality over quantity.</p>
<p>&#8220;The challenge with existing models is that they treat Indian languages as an afterthought,&#8221; said Professor Pushpak Bhattacharyya, who leads the project at IIT Bombay. &#8220;Bharat Gen AI was designed from the ground up to understand the linguistic diversity of India — the scripts, the grammar, the cultural nuances, the code-switching between English and regional languages that is a reality of how Indians communicate.&#8221;</p>
<p>The model is multi-modal, meaning it can process and generate text, images, and audio. This makes it suitable for a wide range of applications, from government services and education to healthcare and agriculture. Two domain-specific versions have already been developed: Aayurparam for health and medical applications, and Agriparam for agriculture — sectors where AI can have transformative impact in India but where English-only models are of limited use.</p>
<h2>The Sovereign AI Imperative</h2>
<p>The concept of &#8220;Sovereign AI&#8221; — the idea that nations should develop and control their own AI capabilities rather than depending entirely on foreign technology companies — has gained significant traction globally in 2025-26. France has invested in Mistral AI, the UAE has developed Falcon, and China has multiple state-backed LLM initiatives. India&#8217;s Bharat Gen AI is its answer to this global trend.</p>
<p>The strategic rationale is clear. AI models trained on Western datasets can carry biases, lack cultural context, and raise data sovereignty concerns when Indian citizens&#8217; data is processed on foreign servers. A domestically developed model allows India to control the data pipeline, ensure cultural appropriateness, and build AI applications that serve the country&#8217;s specific needs.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is not just about technology — it&#8217;s about digital sovereignty,&#8221; said MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan. &#8220;As AI becomes the backbone of economic growth, governance, and national security, India cannot afford to be dependent on foreign AI models. Bharat Gen AI is our declaration of AI independence.&#8221;</p>
<h2>Applications and Use Cases</h2>
<p>The government has outlined an ambitious deployment plan for Bharat Gen AI across multiple sectors. In governance, the model will power multilingual chatbots for government services, enabling citizens to interact with schemes and portals in their native language. The model is already being piloted on the UMANG app for answering queries about schemes like PM-KISAN, Ayushman Bharat, and Ujjwala Yojana in regional languages.</p>
<p>In education, Bharat Gen AI will enable personalised learning content in all 22 languages, addressing one of the biggest barriers to quality education in India — the lack of content in mother tongues. The model can generate lesson plans, answer student queries, and even create assessment materials in languages like Assamese, Kannada, or Odia, where quality digital educational content is scarce.</p>
<p>The healthcare application, Aayurparam, is designed to assist rural health workers in diagnosing common conditions, interpreting test results, and providing treatment guidance in local languages. Given that India faces a severe shortage of doctors in rural areas, an AI assistant that speaks the patient&#8217;s language could be a lifesaver — literally.</p>
<p>The agricultural version, Agriparam, provides crop advisory, weather-based farming recommendations, and market price information in the farmer&#8217;s own language. With over 55% of India&#8217;s population dependent on agriculture, this application has the potential to reach hundreds of millions of users.</p>
<h2>Challenges and the Road Ahead</h2>
<p>Despite the excitement, experts caution that building a world-class indigenous AI model is a marathon, not a sprint. The quality of training data in many Indian languages remains a challenge, and the model&#8217;s performance in languages with smaller digital footprints will need continuous improvement. Computing infrastructure is another bottleneck — training large AI models requires enormous GPU clusters, and India&#8217;s data centre capacity, while growing, still lags behind the US and China.</p>
<p>There are also questions about how Bharat Gen AI will interact with — or compete against — commercial AI models. Indian businesses and developers currently rely heavily on GPT, Gemini, and Claude for their AI needs. The government will need to demonstrate that Bharat Gen AI offers genuine advantages in Indian language tasks to drive adoption.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Website-building software giant Wix is cutting approximately 20% of its workforce — around 1,000 jobs — in one of the tech industry&#8217;s most significant AI-driven restructuring moves of 2026. CEO Avishai Abrahami shared the news in a company-wide memo posted on X (formerly Twitter) on May 28, citing the &#8220;fast evolution of AI capabilities&#8221; and the strengthening Israeli shekel as dual drivers of the painful decision.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;Today is a sad day for me,&#8221; Abrahami wrote. &#8220;We have made a very hard decision. We are reducing the Wix team size by roughly 20%. It is one of the hardest decisions I have had to make, but I am confident it is the right one.&#8221; The Israeli-headquartered company, which employs just under 5,300 workers globally, joins a growing list of tech firms that have cited AI as a reason for significant workforce reductions this year.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Two Forces Driving the Cuts</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Abrahami identified two primary factors behind the layoffs. The first is economic: the exchange rate between the Israeli shekel and the US dollar has shifted significantly in recent quarters, with the shekel strengthening against the dollar &#8220;almost every day.&#8221; Since Wix generates revenue primarily in dollars but pays a substantial portion of its workforce in shekels, this currency dynamic creates what Abrahami described as a &#8220;structural pressure&#8221; on the company&#8217;s ability to operate profitably.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The second factor is technological — and far more consequential for the broader tech industry. &#8220;We have witnessed the most significant shift in how companies are built since the invention of modern programming languages in the 1970s,&#8221; Abrahami wrote. &#8220;This is not just about adopting new tools — it is about rewiring how companies are built, how they think, how they manage and how they operate.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The CEO argued that companies embracing AI will &#8220;not only build faster; they will build things the previous generation literally could not have imagined.&#8221; For Wix, this means becoming a &#8220;faster, leaner, and flatter organization&#8221; — with fewer management layers, faster decision-making, and a smaller but more AI-augmented workforce.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Xengineer and Creators: AI-Native Roles</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In his memo, Abrahami highlighted two new roles that Wix has recently created as part of its AI transformation. The &#8220;Xengineer&#8221; is described as a &#8220;design-first engineer&#8221; who uses AI throughout the entire development lifecycle — from ideation and prototyping to coding, testing, and deployment. Unlike traditional software engineers who write code manually, Xengineers are expected to leverage AI tools to accelerate every phase of development.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The second role, &#8220;Creators,&#8221; appears to focus on AI-augmented content and design work. Both roles were introduced in a Wix company blog in January 2026 and represent the company&#8217;s vision for what work will look like in an AI-native organization.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;Fewer layers means faster decisions, clearer ownership, and less distance between the people setting direction and the people building the product,&#8221; Abrahami explained. &#8220;But it also means a smaller number of people.&#8221; The implication is clear: AI is not just automating individual tasks but restructuring entire organisational hierarchies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Competitive Pressure from AI-First Platforms</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wix&#8217;s AI pivot comes amid intense competitive pressure from a new generation of AI-first website and application builders. Platforms like Lovable, which allows users to create functional web applications through natural language descriptions (&#8220;vibe-coding&#8221;), have emerged as direct threats to Wix&#8217;s core business model. These AI-native tools can generate in minutes what traditionally took hours or days of manual web development.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wix has responded by integrating AI deeply into its platform — its AI Site Generator, launched in 2024, allows users to create complete websites from text prompts. However, the company&#8217;s share price tells a more sobering story: Wix stock is down 23% since the start of 2026, reflecting investor concerns about whether the company can compete effectively in an AI-transformed market.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The fundamental challenge for Wix is existential: if AI can enable anyone to build a website or web application without technical expertise, does the world still need a dedicated website-building platform? Abrahami&#8217;s memo suggests he believes Wix can survive and thrive by becoming AI-native itself, but the 20% workforce reduction indicates the transition will be painful.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wix joins Snap, Block, Atlassian, and a handful of other technology companies that have explicitly cited AI when announcing layoffs in 2026. The language used by executives in these announcements has become strikingly similar — as industry observers have noted, the template typically includes acknowledging the difficulty of the decision, citing AI as transformative, and promising that the resulting organisation will be stronger and more innovative.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The pattern raises important questions about the labour market implications of AI adoption. While AI proponents argue that the technology will create more jobs than it destroys — in areas like AI training, prompt engineering, and AI oversight — the near-term reality for thousands of displaced workers is considerably less optimistic.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A recent Morgan Stanley report estimated that AI could lead European banks to cut up to 20% of jobs, while investment firm Muddy Waters&#8217; CEO Carson Block warned that AI could displace 15% of knowledge workers in the US within three years. India&#8217;s outsourcing industry — which employs millions in software development, customer support, and business process operations — is particularly exposed to AI-driven displacement.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Impact on India&#8217;s Tech Sector</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For India, which has the world&#8217;s largest IT services industry employing over 5 million people, the Wix layoffs are a cautionary signal. Indian IT giants like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro have been investing heavily in AI capabilities while simultaneously grappling with reduced hiring and shifting client demands. The fear is that AI will automate many of the routine coding, testing, and support tasks that have been the bread and butter of India&#8217;s IT outsourcing model.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, optimists point out that India&#8217;s AI talent pool is growing rapidly, and companies that successfully transition to AI-augmented workforces could actually see increased demand for their services. The key is whether Indian tech workers can upskill fast enough to stay ahead of automation — a race that grows more urgent with every announcement like Wix&#8217;s.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As Abrahami concluded in his memo: &#8220;Companies that embrace this change will not only build faster; they will build things the previous generation literally could not have imagined.&#8221; For the 1,000 Wix employees losing their jobs, the challenge is ensuring they are part of building that future, not casualties of it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Anthropic, the San Francisco-based AI safety company, has released Claude Opus 4.8 — a significant upgrade to its flagship large language model — while simultaneously offering a tantalising preview of Mythos, a new class of AI model with capabilities that the company says require stronger safeguards before they can be made generally available. The announcements, made on May 28, signal both the rapid pace of AI advancement and the growing tension between capability and safety in the industry.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Claude Opus 4.8, which replaces the previous Opus 4.7 at the same price point, arrives with improvements across benchmarks, enhanced honesty characteristics, and several new features designed to make the model a more effective collaborator for complex tasks. The update is available immediately on claude.ai, through the API, and in Claude Code — Anthropic&#8217;s coding assistant.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What&#8217;s New in Opus 4.8</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Anthropic highlights honesty as one of the most prominent improvements in the new model. According to the company&#8217;s internal alignment assessment, Opus 4.8 &#8220;reaches new highs on our measures of prosocial traits like supporting user autonomy and acting in the user&#8217;s best interest.&#8221; The model also shows rates of misaligned behaviour — such as deception or cooperation with misuse — that are substantially lower than its predecessor and similar to Anthropic&#8217;s best-aligned model, Claude Mythos Preview.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Three major new features accompany the release. The first is <strong>dynamic workflows</strong> — a research preview feature available in Claude Code that allows the model to tackle very large-scale programming problems. When activated, Claude can plan work and then run hundreds of parallel subagents in a single session. With Opus 4.8, these agents can run for even longer than before, and the system verifies its outputs before reporting back to the user.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The second feature is <strong>effort control</strong>, now available in claude.ai and Cowork. A new slider alongside the model selector lets users choose how much computational effort Claude puts into a response. Higher effort settings trigger deeper thinking and more frequent chain-of-thought reasoning, producing better but slower responses. Lower effort settings deliver faster results while consuming fewer rate limits — giving users explicit control over the speed-quality tradeoff for the first time.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The third update is technical but significant: the Messages API now accepts system entries inside the messages array. This allows developers to update Claude&#8217;s instructions mid-task without breaking the prompt cache or routing the update through a user turn — a capability particularly useful for agentic applications where permissions, token budgets, or environment context need to change during execution.</p>
