<h2>Power Grid Under Pressure</h2>
<p>The record power demand has exposed vulnerabilities in India&#8217;s electricity infrastructure. While the country has made significant progress in expanding generation capacity — including a rapid buildout of solar and wind energy — the grid&#8217;s ability to manage peak demand during extreme weather events remains a challenge.</p>
<p>The Power Ministry reported that some states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand, experienced power cuts lasting 2-4 hours during peak afternoon and evening hours as demand outstripped local supply. Industrial consumers in several states were asked to reduce consumption during peak hours to prevent grid failures.</p>

<p>&#8220;India is going through the same transition that China went through 15-20 years ago,&#8221; said Ajay Shankar, former Secretary of the Department of Industrial Policy. &#8220;When hundreds of millions of people switch on air conditioners for the first time, the impact on the power grid is enormous. We need to plan for this structural shift, not just manage crisis-to-crisis.&#8221;</p>

<p>The eclipse is expected to be visible as a partial solar eclipse across most of India, with the degree of obscuration varying by location. Northern and western India will experience a more pronounced eclipse, while southern regions will see a smaller fraction of the Sun covered. The event has generated widespread excitement among amateur astronomers, science enthusiasts, and the general public alike.</p>

<p>According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and NASA&#8217;s eclipse prediction data, the partial solar eclipse will begin in India in the late morning hours, with the maximum eclipse occurring around midday. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The concerns have deepened further this week as updated models suggest the cumulative seasonal figure could slip to around 90% of LPA, bringing the forecast perilously close to the &#8220;deficient&#8221; threshold. For a country where 60% of farmland relies on monsoon rains and the kharif season drives nearly half the annual agricultural output, the implications are profound.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The El Niño Factor</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the heart of the grim outlook is a developing super El Niño in the Equatorial Pacific Ocean. El Niño — characterised by warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific — disrupts the Walker Circulation, a critical atmospheric pressure system that drives moisture-laden winds towards the Indian subcontinent during the June-September monsoon season.</p>

For now, India watches the Pacific with growing unease as the first monsoon rains, expected around June 1 on the Kerala coast, will provide the first real-world indication of what lies ahead.</p>
